It's been an intense 7 weeks for the Civil Service Live team at the Cabinet Office, lead by the indomitable Alexandra Whiteley and Amrita Devaiah FRSA. Thank you to EVERYONE who made the events a massive success; from the 18,000 delegates who attended, to the volunteers who managed the logistics on the day, to theme leads who created the content, to speakers who spoke with passion on their subjects, to sponsors who made it possible, and shared their learnings with government, to exhibitors who shared their best practice. And of course, nothing could have been possible without our amazing delivery partner Dods Events who have helped us put on a magnificent show!

A year in the making, the largest learning and development event of its kind in Europe took place across 7 locations across the UK, bringing opportunities to build skills and networks closer to the communities we serve.

So what were the highlights of this year’s event?

? 18,304 Attendees

? 767 Spot mentoring pairs

? 798?Interactive sessions

? 2,415?Expert speakers

? 313 Exhibitors

Let's dive into exactly what's been going on in the last couple of months...

?? We kicked off Civil Service Live in Newcastle: delegates enjoyed hearing the opening address from the Cabinet Secretary Simon Case and other leaders in the North East, finding out what it took to put on the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games , and learning more about improving accessibility. More than two thousand civil servants got stuck into spot mentoring and interactive sessions, including listening to more than 300 expert speakers!

"I enjoyed seeing how other departments did things, which can be quite different, and the 'Interested in Developing your Career?' session was really inspiring."
"I enjoyed attending a face to face event, being able to set time aside to consider the bigger picture of being a civil servant."

?? Next up we were in Glasgow, where the weather was being very kind, and more than 60 exhibitors spoke to thousands of civil servants about the great work being done across the organisation. With more than 100 sessions delivered, delegates came away from the event with a wealth of new knowledge on topics such as leadership, innovation, and career development.

"I enjoyed the opportunity to hear from a variety of speakers and the array of work across the civil service. It was valuable to hear about areas I was unaware of within my own organisation and think about how I could utilise them in my work."
"I have just started as an intern and this way I had the chance to spend time with fellow interns in a fantastic environment outside of the office, but within our areas of interest."

?? We were excited to deliver taster events in Belfast and Exeter this year, where hundreds of civil servants from Northern Ireland and the South West experienced small but mighty Civil Service Live events - not least attended by Simon Case, Chief of the Joint Intelligence Committee Madeleine Alessandri , and UK Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary David Williams CB.

"Opening address and presenting with impact were my favourite sessions. Most of all it was fantastic to see such a wide array of civil servants in the one place. It was a great networking opportunity overall."
"I enjoyed the whole day. Very professional. Everyone was forward leaning, fully dedicated and committed to making this a memorial day."

?? Manchester was next on our tour, where more than three thousand lively civil servants came together for a full on day of learning and development. They enjoyed more than 150 spot mentoring sessions, and hearing from more than 350 expert speakers covering popular topics such as pensions, writing skills, and creating an ambitious Civil Service.

"As a volunteer I enjoyed the full day! The sessions in my room were all excellent and the 'Unconference' was a really interesting way to generate discussion and something I will bring back to my own team."
"I loved getting the opportunity to meet representatives from different areas of the civil service. It helped me to see what was happening in different areas and how we're all working together to achieve our aims."

?? Our penultimate event hailed in Caerdydd/Cardiff! It was an honour to have the First Minister for Wales the Rt Hon Mark Drakeford MS, the Minister for the Cabinet Office the Rt Hon Jeremy Quin MP, Secretary of State for Wales the Rt Hon David Davies MP, the Cabinet Secretary Simon Case,? and Permanent Secretary for the Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government Dr Andrew Goodall CBE take part in the event, speaking at plenary sessions, chatting with delegates over a cuppa, and exploring the exhibition spaces.

"I enjoyed all of the sessions I attended. I really appreciate civil service live as an opportunity to network with other departments and find out interesting work that others are doing."
"I enjoyed talks where they gave genuinely helpful advice to improve my day-to-day work or career advice that I could actually start to implement immediately."

???? Last but not least, we hosted the finale of Civil Service Live across two days in London where nearly eight thousand civil servants joined in the last hoorah. As well as enjoying all the wonderful learning and development opportunities available, they also got a taster of what a senior meeting looked like - by spectating Wednesday Morning Colleagues chaired by the Cabinet Secretary and attended by permanent secretaries across government.

Alex Aiken , Executive Director of Government Communication said:

"Civil Service Live 2023 was the best ever. From Exeter to Glasgow great ideas, good case studies and innovative ideas typified a spirit of public service, educating and engaging in order to improve the work we do.”

It's been an exhausting and exhilarating year preparing and delivering Civil Service Live 2023. If you attended, we hope you found the events as useful and empowering as we did.

Thank you again to everyone who was part of this huge programme.

After working for the civil service for 13 years I recently tried to re apply. I was told I needed my certificates from school. I'm 53 who on earth still has those? I was also told because it's no longer done in house they cannot access my records. Absolutely ridiculous.

‘So you think you could run a COBR meeting’ was definitely a highlight for me. Fascinating stuff!
