Civil Aviation Authority STEM Big Bang Award

Civil Aviation Authority STEM Big Bang Award

By Brenda Jefcoate

In partnership with Engineering UK’s Big Bang Competition, our STEM programme is sponsoring the UK Civil Aviation Authority Future in Aviation Award ??

Announcing the award during British Science Week, our award will recognise young people’s innovation, creativity and problem-solving skills in aircraft, drones, and space exploration.

We recognise the importance of STEM subjects to our industry and are looking forward to celebrating at this year's Big Bang Fair, the largest STEM event in the UK.

What are some of the project ideas?

  • Finding ways to make it easier for people with specific needs to fly or work in the aviation industry e.g., designing aircraft, building runways and launchpads and helping to manage air traffic.
  • Researching and developing greener practices in the aviation industry e.g., developing alternative fuels for planes, improving air traffic control systems and making airports more sustainable.
  • Designing and improving drones to help benefit the community.
  • Exploring how we use space and manage rocket launches and satellites.

The team are particularly interested in projects that develop a more safe, sustainable and inclusive aviation industry.

When does the competition close?

The competition closes at the end of March, with Engineering UK then hosting two rounds of judging, including:

  • Big Bang Competition Online Heats: Five Civil Aviation Authority judges.
  • Big Bang Competition Finals: Two Civil Aviation Authority judges.

The winner will be announced during the Big Bang Exhibition Awards Ceremony 19 – 21 June 2024 at the NEC in Birmingham, winning £500 and a framed certificate.
