The Cityscapes Collection

In the tapestry of my artistic journey, "The Cityscapes Collection" emerges as a vivid chapter, a series of large paintings that mark a new epoch in my evolution as an abstract impressionist. This collection, available for exploration and acquisition at Hans Wendland's Cityscapes Collection, is more than a mere assembly of artworks; it is a profound reflection of my life lived amidst the pulsating hearts of the world's greatest cities.

From the romantic avenues of Paris to the labyrinthine canals of Venice, the historical aura of Istanbul to the vibrant streets of Amsterdam, Trieste, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and beyond – my canvas has been shaped by these urban landscapes. My sojourns have also led me to the bustling metropolises of Tokyo, London, Miami, Rome, and Chicago, each city imprinting its unique character onto my soul.

Cities, especially the sprawling giants, have always held a magnetic pull for me. Walking their streets, I've inhaled their distinct aromas, felt the palpable shifts from day to night, from serene sanctuaries to edgy neighborhoods, from bustling centers to forgotten ruins. My fascination with architecture and civil engineering has been fueled by the diverse styles and structures that define each cityscape.

In these urban labyrinths, I've wandered through alleys and subterranean passages, confronted the stark contrasts between affluence and poverty, and experienced the plight of homelessness – a reality I briefly shared. These cities, with their ceaseless motion, vibrant lights, and cacophony of sounds, have been both my muse and nemesis, leaving indelible marks of joy and despair.

"The Cityscapes Collection" is the result of this intricate dance with urbanity – an artistic explosion into uncharted territories. I've abstracted cities into patterns, some familiar, some ethereal. My intent was for the viewer to feel the full spectrum of these urban experiences through my canvases.

The collection uniquely captures both the macro and micro perspectives of city life. Like aerial photography, some paintings offer a bird's-eye view of intricate grid patterns – the architectural DNA of a city. Others present asymmetrical clusters, mirroring the chaotic yet organic growth of urban landscapes, reminiscent of rabbit-warren streets.

Creating these pieces was cathartic, releasing years of emotional conflict tied to my urban experiences. Each stroke was a step towards reconciliation with the cities that shaped me. The most profound lesson these cities imparted was one of multicultural and multiethnic existence – a living canvas of racism and integration, despair and hope, discord and harmony.

4054 - Hansi e Papà - Sold Out 180 x 140 cm - Mixed media on canvas. This is the last painting I painted with my son Hansi before he died. I love him, I miss him terribly he is in my thoughts every single day. I love you son!

Each canvas in this collection narrates a tale of contrasts – of winners and losers, beauty and fear. Deliberately unnamed, identified only by numbers, they invite the viewer to delve into the stories they silently narrate, each a poignant testament to a significant urban encounter in my life's journey.
