City Shapers Collective: Reimagining Bengaluru’s Urban Future

Bengaluru stands at a crossroads, grappling with rapid urbanization while striving to preserve its rich cultural heritage. Recognizing the need for a deeper dialogue on the city’s evolving identity, MOD Foundation has launched the City Shapers Collective—a long-term initiative that examines how design influences the city’s transformation and future.?

This initiative is more than just a series of events; it is a platform to spark critical conversations, foster collaboration, and drive actionable insights for Bengaluru’s urban landscape.?

The Inaugural Panel: Bridging Tradition and Modernity

In November 2024, the City Shapers Collective debuted with an engaging panel discussion titled Confluence of Art, Culture, and Urban Change at the BLR Design Centre. This inaugural event brought together thought leaders from diverse disciplines from Masons Ink , Venkataramanan Associates , Studio Sorted and Fields of View to discuss how Bengaluru can harmonize its cultural essence with the demands of a rapidly growing metropolis.?

The panel explored:?

  1. Preserving Identity in a Modernizing City: How can Bengaluru retain its soul while adapting to contemporary urban challenges??
  2. Design as a Catalyst for Change: The transformative potential of design in addressing urban issues like mobility, public spaces, and housing.?
  3. Inclusive Urban Narratives: Ensuring that the city’s growth reflects the aspirations of its diverse communities.?

These discussions underscored the need for innovative solutions that are both rooted in tradition and responsive to the future.?

Why the Collective Matters

Bengaluru’s growth is marked by stark contrasts—between its heritage neighborhoods and tech-driven peripheries, between its bustling streets and shrinking public spaces. The City Shapers Collective addresses these complexities by positioning design as a powerful tool for rethinking the city.?

The initiative aims to:?

  1. Foster Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Bringing together architects, planners, artists, and citizens to ideate and co-create solutions.?
  2. Focus on Human-Centric Design: Prioritizing the needs of people over infrastructure, ensuring liveable and inclusive urban environments.?
  3. Inspire Actionable Change: Translating discussions into tangible projects that address pressing urban challenges.?

A Vision for Bengaluru’s Future

The City Shapers Collective is a reflection of MOD Foundation’s commitment to shaping a sustainable, vibrant Bengaluru. Through a series of events, workshops, and dialogues, the initiative seeks to engage stakeholders at every level—from policymakers and practitioners to everyday citizens.?

Looking ahead, the Collective will explore topics such as sustainable mobility, urban resilience & climate change, and the role of public art in fostering civic engagement. Each event will build on the learnings from previous sessions, creating a dynamic, evolving dialogue that adapts to the city’s changing needs.?

Join the Journey

The City Shapers Collective is not just about shaping a city—it’s about shaping a community that values creativity, inclusivity, and innovation.??

As Bengaluru continues to grow, initiatives like these will play a critical role in ensuring the city evolves thoughtfully and sustainably. MOD Foundation invites you to be part of this exciting journey to reimagine Bengaluru’s urban future.?

Being a Bangalorian and having conducted studies on morphology of this city at individual capacity, I find this forum as a platform for discussing various questions, thoughts and observations. Having said that, following are some questions that I often struggle to answer myself - 1. What is Culture of Bangalore? 2. What is the Soul of Bangalore? 3. What is that historical layer/ layers of the city that we admire and want to revive/ preserve/ admire about? 4. When we start to shift our focus on Mobility/ Climate change/ Infrastructure, will the conversation of Culture/ identity/ soul of Bangalore, remains as just admiration or words that we use to begin our discussion or make statements and eventually lost between words? I would be very happy to hear and have more deeper discussions to gain insight from the resource persons.
