City of Perth Council Meeting: 25 October 2022

Council met at 5pm on Tuesday 25?October for our full monthly council meeting. As usual the below snapshot is my personal view only. I encourage you to view our live stream and visit the agenda page to access officer reports.

1. Australian Oil & Gas Conference - 2023

Council approved a $50,000 sponsorship for the 2023 AOG conference . This is a well known Perth event, and it’s vital?it stays that way. Brisbane desperately wants to be like Perth, so they’re trying to pretend like they have a big enough base in Oil and Gas to pinch it.?

This investment shows how much we value the conference staying in Perth for the long run. In 2021 it was scaled back due to WA's tough border restrictions, which caused a 30 per cent drop off in overseas and interstate attendees. It?was cancelled altogether in?2022.?Knowing the strong history of this conference and what it delivers for Perth, we?can realistically predict at least 1,800 visitors from outside of WA will visit our CBD once again. Considering all the hotel rooms, dinners, bar tabs, coffee, the activity is worth investing in on behalf of our ratepayers.

2. Edith Cowan Statue

Council approved the application made by the Anghie Family for a privately funded statue of Edith Cowan to be erected on St Georges Terrace outside ANZAC House. They have utilised a pre-existing Council policy open to any member of the public and put in their own funds which deserves a lot of credit.

3. Rejecting the call from WALGA to pay superannuation to Councillors

I was very happy to?see the majority of my Council colleagues reject WALGA's push to see Elected Members receive superannuation. You can view my speech on this motion by clicking here.

4.?Deputy Lord Mayor

Cr Liam Gobbert was elected as our new Deputy Lord Mayor after Cr Di Bain stepped down after her year in office. Cr Bain continues as a Councillor through to the end of her term in October 2023.

• Twilight Hawkers Market is back
• The City is supporting a trial closure of James Street to cars on weekends in response to a request from WA Police.
