Cities around the world require efficient drainage systems for several reasons. One significant factor is the prevention of flooding during heavy rainfall or storms.
For instance, London, the capital of the United Kingdom, has an extensive network of drains, sewers, and tunnels to manage stormwater runoff and prevent flooding in low-lying areas like Thamesmead.
In addition to flood prevention, good drainage systems help alleviate waterlogging issues.
New Delhi, the capital of India, experiences monsoon seasons characterized by heavy rains. The city's drainage system, including a network of canals and stormwater drains, is crucial in preventing waterlogging in low-lying areas and ensuring the smooth flow of rainwater.
Proper drainage is also essential for preserving infrastructure.
Tokyo, the capital of Japan, faces the risk of typhoons and heavy rainfall. The city's advanced drainage system, which includes underground tunnels, helps protect buildings, roads, and transportation infrastructure from water damage, minimizing disruptions and maintenance costs.
Another reason for well-designed drainage systems is the preservation of road surfaces.

Paris, the capital of France, has an extensive network of storm drains and gutters to manage rainfall. This helps prevent water from pooling on roads, reducing the risk of damage such as potholes and cracks, and ensuring safer driving conditions.
Lastly, cities need good drainage systems to protect the environment.
Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is known for its intricate canal system, which serves multiple purposes, including drainage. The canals help manage excess water, maintain the city's water balance, and contribute to the preservation of the unique ecosystem and heritage of Amsterdam.
In summary, cities worldwide, including London, New Delhi, Tokyo, Paris, and Amsterdam, rely on effective drainage systems to prevent flooding, mitigate waterlogging, protect infrastructure, preserve road surfaces, and safeguard the environment.
These examples demonstrate the importance of well-designed drainage systems in various world capitals.

1 年A drainage system is as efficient as it’s pipes are. One weak link, no matter how small, in the network is sufficient to collapse the entire system that runs invisible beneath our feet. Congratulations to Electrosteel Castings Ltd for a well maintained, self thriving system of water & sewage transportation across the world, and kudos on the well researched article!

1 年Well researched article. While mentioning in your write up about Netherlands, informally Holland , despite one third of the country lying below sea level but the drainage & the flood protection system of the Netherlands apart from being immaculate is a modern day wonder with very low pilferages.
