CISA Overview- Episode 1
In first series today, I will cover an overview of the CISA examination, including who is eligible to take the exam and the benefits of becoming a Certified Information Systems Auditor.
About CISA
Before pursuing the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) designation, individuals should understand its scope. Granted by the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA), CISA is globally recognized as the benchmark for professionals in information systems auditing, control, and security. Today, organizations often require CISA-certified professionals for both internal audits and as third-party vendors for external auditing.
CISA Exam Eligibility
To earn the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) designation, candidates must first pass the CISA exam and then meet additional ISACA certification requirements. Simply passing the exam does not result in certification.
Typically, individuals with a relevant bachelor's degree are eligible to take the exam. However, to achieve certification, candidates must have five years of professional experience in information systems auditing, control, or security. One year of general experience counts as equivalent to five years of specialized experience.
Certain waivers apply: a bachelor’s degree provides a two-year waiver, a master’s degree offers a three-year waiver, and an associate degree grants a one-year waiver. Consequently, fresh graduates with no professional experience must wait at least three years after passing the exam to obtain certification.

Given the current trend of graduates passing the exam without relevant work experience, it is important to carefully consider the timing of pursuing certification. Ideally, plan to obtain certification after having at least 2.5 years of relevant professional experience for the candidates only have bachelor’s degree. Those with experience in business, finance, or related fields can pursue certification once they meet the experience requirements.
Benefits of CISA
Earning the CISA certification can significantly advance your career in information systems auditing and security. It unlocks opportunities for higher-level positions and increases earning potential, as certified professionals are in high demand for their specialized skills.
Additionally, CISA provides global recognition and credibility, demonstrating your commitment to industry standards. It equips you with current knowledge and skills, supports career advancement, and connects you with a worldwide network of professionals. If you are aiming to elevate your career and make a significant impact, CISA is a powerful credential to consider.
In the next series, I will cover the exam’s mark distribution and provide insights into the types of questions you can expect.
