What is the circular economy?

The circular economy is an economic model and philosophy aiming to minimise waste and maximise resources. It contrasts the traditional linear economy, which follows a "take, make, dispose" model, where resources are extracted, products are manufactured, used, and then discarded as waste. In a circular economy, the goal is to create a closed-loop system where products, materials, and resources are continually reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and recycled, thus reducing the environmental impact of production and consumption.

Fundamental principles of the circular economy include:

1.????? Design for Longevity: Products are designed to have a longer lifespan, be easily repairable, and facilitate upgrading or refurbishing.

2.????? Reuse: Promoting the use of products and components multiple times before they are discarded.

4.????? Recycling: Recovering materials and resources from discarded products to create new products or components.

6.????? Sharing and Collaborative Consumption: Encouraging shared access to products or services, reducing individual ownership, and promoting resource sharing.

The circular economy concept addresses environmental challenges, including reducing resource depletion, energy consumption, and waste generation. It also has the potential to create economic opportunities, such as new business models centred around repair, refurbishment, and recycling and the development of innovative and sustainable products.
