Circuit Training
Why Circuit Training Might Be Just What You Are Looking For...Anthea Lannoy (Personal Trainer)

Circuit Training

Circuit training is a form of body conditioning that involves endurance training, resistance training, high-intensity aerobics, and exercises performed in a circuit, similar to high-intensity interval training. It targets strength-building and muscular endurance.

How does circuit training work?

A combination of exercises is performed at ‘stations' with short rest periods between them for either a set number of repetitions or a prescribed amount of time. One circuit is when all of the chosen exercises have been completed, but a session can include multiple circuits.

So why is it such a great workout??

Regardless of your fitness goals, improving muscular strength is important. As we age, our bodies lose muscle and bone density. Working on areas like your arms, legs, and core muscles can make you stronger and help prevent diseases like osteoporosis. Note that both men and women are at risk!

Routines with aerobic exercise increase your blood circulation and get your heart rate up. And we all know the value of cardio: weight loss, reduced risk of diseases, better sleep and mood, and so on. Circuit training may be better at lowering blood pressure and cholesterol than other workouts and is also great for all ages; studies have shown that circuit training is beneficial for kids and adults too.

It’s an ideal form of training for all fitness levels; whether you are a beginner or have been exercising all your life, you can do circuit training. You can always modify exercises to make them easier or more challenging; beginners should exercise with caution, starting with lighter weights and taking more rest between each station if needed.

If you’re busy and want to combine strength and aerobic training, this is a great workout option for you. You can do it on your own or in a class setting where the exercise stations are provided for you. Be in and out in a set amount of time and get a great workout in. Boom!

If you enjoy group activities, circuit training is a great social experience. Move the circle with old friends or make new ones. Set it to music and really get motivated!

This workout can be fast-paced, fun, and high-intensity. When you constantly switch up your activities, your mind doesn’t have time to drift. Plus, you can tailor it by altering the exercise stations, and the variations are limitless.??

While many people do circuit training with light weights, jump ropes, and other pieces of equipment, you can do it with just your body weight. For this reason, circuit training is great for people who work out at home or don’t feel like going to the gym. Squats, push-ups, sit-ups, mountain climbers, jumping jacks, lunges, and dips (which you can do on a chair, sofa, or the edge of a bed) are all bodyweight movements that build strength and get your heart rate up, making them ideal options for a no-equipment circuit training workout.

Whether you use it to enhance your current fitness routine or make it your new exercise go-to, circuit training has some great advantages. It can also be a great combo with one-on-one personal training sessions to get form tips and ensure you’re getting the most from your workouts.
