CIRCLETTER ? #11: EU Citizens get right to repair; China aims for 50%-e-waste-recycling target'"

1) What happened?

It has taken years, now it's a reality. The EU lawmakers reached a deal on new repair rules. This deal is still provisional.

?? Key Changes:

  • Mandatory repair for essential items (like smartphones) post-warranty
  • Transparent rights information for consumers
  • Options for replacements during repairs
  • Free online repair price access
  • Extended legal guarantee for repaired goods

?? Market Impact:

  • Ensures affordable spare parts availability
  • Tackles repair barriers imposed by manufacturers
  • European online platform launch to connect consumers with local repair services

?? Affordability Focus:

  • Introduces measures like repair vouchers and reduced VAT rates on services, making repair more appealing than replacement

Sebastian Daus thanks for the useful summary.

Also showing the way: China aims to recycle 50 percent of electronic waste by 2025. More in the curated reads.

2) Curated reads:

1. New EU law sets to make repair more affordable for selected products

In a leap forward, the new law supports independent repair and improves consumers’ access to affordable repair options, by introducing rules for reasonable prices for original parts as well as banning software practices which prevent independent repair and the use of compatible and reused spare parts.

2. China aims to recycle 50% of e-waste by 2025

China is the biggest mobile phone market. The Chinese government hopes to properly recycle 50 percent of e-waste by 2025.

3. Circular Manufacturing: walking the walk

Hilti mapped 250,000 tons of material it produces, categorized them into material groups -- steel, aluminum, plastics, copper -- and determined the amount of recycled content for each group.

4. "Recycling is not saving the planet"

"The problem is that 93% of all recycled textiles today comes from plastic bottles, not from old clothes. In Europe, most textile waste is either dumped or burned. Only 22% is recycled or reused."

5. Prevented Ocean Plastic hits 2.5 billion bottle collection milestone

Prevent Ocean Plastic has collected over 50,000 tonnes of plastic since the programme launched in 2019, equivalent to 2.5 billion bottles prevented from reaching the ocean.

6. Oil and gas businesses: investing in circularity

"96% of oil and gas businesses are feeling the effects of resource scarcity, prompting 65% to increase their investment in circularity initiatives within the next three years"

7. Bringing the circular economy to the global south

“This will take huge amounts of infrastructure investments”.

8. Circular Economy in practice in Argentina

9. Africa & Circular Economy

Uganda has taken a major step towards creating a circular economy to drive sustainable growth and green industrialisation in line with its Vision 2040 national agenda.

10. Deplayment of AI in waste sector

"Only 1% of waste is monitored in facilities, and even in advanced economies, 40% of waste sorting is done by hand".

A step in the right direction. We just need the #RepairDontWaste ethos shrined in legislation to achieve all industrial, commercial, biomedical and defence technologies that together generate over a 3rd of the world's annual E-waste production. These systems need to be designed for repair and end users should be enabled with the right tools and training for repair. See RepairDontWaste.com and join us!

Great one Harald Friedl with plenty of things happening. I hope the new law will really make it and doesn't get watered down. I am a bit sceptical after seeing what is happening to the promising Green Deal that the EU was working on. Started with great promises, but now step by step it gets weakened. Hurting us and there other species in the process.

Excellent summary Harald Friedl. Ahead of the EU elections, given my large French Linkedin network and the low knowledge on EU law benefits and impact, I would like to share, in French, one of your paragraphs ?Une nouvelle législation européenne vise à rendre la réparation plus abordable pour certains produits.
