Circles of Support
During a recent Leap webinar, we heard from our guest speakers Margaret and Jeremy Ward about the circle of support they set up to support their daughter's inclusion in community life.
If you would like to learn more about circles of support we are happy to provide some information and resources. Perhaps you are interested in the idea, but unsure if a circle would work for you.
Paid professionals have taken on many of the informal roles that community members used to occupy. One of the unintended negative consequences of this is that it makes it less likely that ordinary citizens will show up in our lives as neighbours and community members.
A circle of support is a way of inviting people in – of practising the art of asking!
Most of us have friends or informal networks that we rely on when we need advice if we are in crisis or difficulty or when we want to share successes in our lives.
Yet for many people with a disability those community connections do not exist automatically and may require intentional and creative endeavours.
This is just one of the ways in which a circle of support can be really helpful.
Please get in touch if you would like to chat about setting up a circle of support, we are always available for conversations to assist families to think through issues related to their child or young adult's inclusion in community.
