CIOs and CISOs Working Together: Why Peer Learning Rocks!

CIOs and CISOs Working Together: Why Peer Learning Rocks!

"The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you." - B.B. King

An engaged attendee at a CIO/CISO Summit can learn more in a day of brainstorming with their peers than weeks of reading the click-bait articles filled with buzzwords and cliches that are circulating the Web. The easiest way to see this is through ‘Knowledge Roundtables’.?

But first, what is a ‘Knowledge Roundtable’?

For this, we’re going to use the example of our upcoming CIO/CISO Summit where we have several peer-led roundtables covering topics such as:

  1. The Use of AI & ML Within Your Industry
  2. Zero Trust - Lagging Behind
  3. Where does the Innovation function start and end? Issues in bringing new tech across departments
  4. Scaling Innovation: Overcoming Cultural Barriers

Now, select your favorite topic and think of 3-4 questions to inspire a lively discussion with your CIO/CISO peers.??

Using option D, “Scaling Innovation: Overcoming Cultural Barriers”, for example:

  1. How can leaders effectively communicate the value of innovation to different stakeholders and departments to gain widespread buy-in?
  2. What approaches or frameworks can be implemented to integrate new technologies into existing workflows without disrupting productivity?
  3. What are the key cultural roadblocks that impede innovation adoption within organizations, and how can we address them?
  4. In what ways can we incentivize and reward innovative thinking at all levels of the organization?

You can see why this is a great exercise in brainstorming for CIOs and CISOs working together.? This is also why many attendees look at this as a form of ‘group therapy’ because they see they are not alone in facing these challenges.??

They find comfort in knowing they aren’t alone in confronting these problems and can count on their peer group to help find solutions.

?"I get by with a little help from my friends" - The Beatles

It's like talking to friends: Everyone gets involved because they feel more comfortable and they meet new people as they support each other and solve problems.

To summarize, peer-to-peer education is highly effective for several reasons:

1. Relatable Learning Experience: This relatability fosters a comfortable environment where learners feel understood, making it easier to grasp complex concepts or topics.

2. Increased Engagement: It encourages active participation, discussions, and collaboration among learners, enhancing their understanding through shared insights and discussions.

3. Enhanced Communication: Peers can communicate in a language that's easily understood by others from the same group

4. Promotion of Critical Thinking: When learners engage in discussions or work together on tasks, they're prompted to analyze, evaluate, and develop creative solutions collaboratively.

5. Cultural Exchange and Diversity: This exposure to varied viewpoints enriches the educational experience, fostering cultural understanding and empathy.

6. Peer Support and Motivation: This sense of camaraderie helps in overcoming challenges and staying motivated throughout the learning process.

7. Long-lasting Impact: These connections can extend beyond the summit, providing ongoing support and opportunities for continued learning.

In short, the effectiveness of peer-to-peer education lies in its ability to create an interactive, supportive, and engaging learning environment that promotes collaboration, critical thinking, and confidence among learners.
