The main models of IT department organization

The Information System is somewhat equivalent to the nervous system of the human body. It conveys information that has the consequence of driving the company forward.

We observe three main types of IT departments in companies, depending on the maturity or the importance of the role of their Information System. The organization of the IT department often reflects the relationship the company has with its Information System.

Three emerging organizational models offer each company the possibility to define the most suitable one for its IT department. We can summarize them as :

  • ???????? IT for execution,
  • ???????? Proactive IT
  • ???????? Core business IT

The Proactive IT Department

(Value creator)

In the proactive IT department model, the Information Systems Department positions itself as a value creator, primarily focused on internal needs. Its goal is to understand and anticipate the requirements of different business units. To achieve this, it adopts a vigilant approach, constantly monitoring industry developments, seeking to identify emerging trends, and trying to stay ahead.

For instance, if the IT department identifies a major shift towards the use of AI-based technologies in the industry, it can take proactive steps to develop internal skills, establish strategic partnerships, or recommend adjustments to existing infrastructure.

The IT department strives to be operational as soon as the needs materialize. In terms of organization, the IT department may report to the General Management or the Administrative and Financial Department, and its presence in the Executive Committee may vary.

In this case, the IT department serves as an internal value creator.

The three types of IT departments do not operate in the same way or have the same objectives. It is common for companies to inherit a specific model that may require evolution.

The different models of IT departments present distinct approaches that respond to the changing needs of companies depending on their maturity. The transition from one model to another can be a complex challenge, but it is essential to effectively adapt to the evolution of the technological and business landscape.
