The Cinema That Made Us - A Podcast
We have all studied the history of cinema at film school. How ‘Cahiers Du Cinema’ was the starting point for many stalwarts of French Cinema including éric Rohmer who was the editor-in-chief of the magazine. Truffaut, Godard, Chabrol and in numerous others wrote and criticised cinema and its Téchiné in the pages of that magazine and their association with it invariably expanded them as thinkers and auteurs in their own craft. We look back at their cinema today and dissect it by juxtaposing the tales their lives have to shed, their nascent critical theory writings and have a deeper understanding of their filmography through the words they wrote and the experiences they shared. However, it still leaves blanks for the undocumented times of their lives when they were sitting in their dingy rooms staring at walls on nights of ‘wondering’ what the future held or if anyone would buy into their vision.
It’s a questions I’m always caught wondering , and I wish someone had asked them then, what led them to their journey up until it got recognised.
As artists , performers , thinkers and technicians we have all had a journey that led us to the realisation of the road towards creation . Along the way like Joseph Campbell’s archetype hero , we are met with various films / pieces of art that pave the way for us to realise our tales as they converted us from mere spectators to students and eventually into the pursuit of creation ourselves.
An artists life is full of subconscious inspirations that eventually result in the bottomless urge to explode in expression.
In this series of IG lives I’ll be speaking to artists, performers , directors , technicians and creators at different stages of their journeys on what are the 5 films that inspired their ‘hero’s journey’ from a childhood fascination with cinema to breaking out and telling their stories on the screen, and realising their true calling lay in the pursuit to finding those stories .
