Cine Gear 2024 - Sim-Plates!
Cine Gear 2024 is wrapped, it was great year! I had the privilege of being apart of many great booths.
I represented Light Sail VR and Assimilate Live FX. Alexander MacLean was my partner-in-crime for the show and he really helped make sure everyone was squared away for the show.
Here is my Video re-cap:
Plate Pros / Fuse Technical Group / Roe Visual Booth
The main booth I was apart of was the Plate Pros , Fuse Technical Group , ROE Visual booth.
Shelly Sabel designed the booth, which was great because it was very open, and her team had a slick playback solution, where you could use an iPad to trigger lots of different elements, from which video was playing on the wall, to turning on/off the white diodes from the new RGBW panels from Roe so you could a/b the white diode.
The biggest announcement from me is a new product called Sim-Plates and the partnership between Light Sail VR and Plate Pros to create them.
Sim-Plates are CG Plate for Car Process work in Virtual Production. They are pre-rendered 360 video files so they work with any media server and any stage.
We have two different pipelines, both render EXRs to 12288x6144 resolution (or higher if needed).
Our main pipeline is OTOY 's Octane Render Engine, which is a non-bias, spectral render engine that is much more advanced than most render engines on the market today.
We render out many render passes, which allow for advanced compositing including changing the sky, re-lighting (using lighting passes) and much more!
We also leverage the power of Render Network Foundation , which allows us to scale our render capabilities to meet the demands of tight production schedules. For example, one of our scenes would have taken months to render on a single GPU, but only took a few hours on the Render Network!
We use an Unreal Engine pipeline that leverages real-time technology where it's beneficial or necessary.
All of our work, and local rendering happens on Silverdraft computers.
Our advanced compositing is done using ASSIMILATE Scratch (a sister software to Live FX).
Kino Flo
I had the honor of working with the founder of Kino Flo, Frieder Hochheim to set up a very unique Image-Based Lighting demo.
We had a GhostFrame demo on the wall, with a day and night scene that I shot in Venice Beach, but more importantly we were LIGHTING both day and night, at the exact same time!
This is able to be captured at the same time on the same camera body with the new Red Camera V-RAPTOR [X] with their Phantom Track technology, and send those feeds to two different monitors.
I also had the honor of showing this demo to Paul Debevec , my VFX hero, who developed Image-Based lighting as we know it today!
This booth was also powered by Silverdraft and ASSIMILATE Live FX, Megapixel HELIOS processor and ROE Visual LED panels.

Creamsource
The next booth that we were apart of was the Creamsource booth, and they had one of the coolest designs for sure!
Jeff Webster (Gaffer for shows like Mandalorian, Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett) and his team, worked with the Creamsource team to design and set up this unique booth, and it was based on a lighting setup they did on one of their shows!
Timothy Duff , James Amorosino , Tama Berkeljon
Dan Walters, Tom Howard , Derek Hoffman
Sean Goossen thanks for the coffee and other *drinks!
Alexander MacLean helped with the booth as well.
Kris Murray created the content with his new venture Seismiq
Aputure
Tim Kang was showing off the new Infinimat by Aputure , and was demonstrating painting with light, by painting in Live FX!
Not only this, but Tim was using specific color charts to get the exact colors he wanted, I bet we will see many others doing this soon.
It was really a simple concept, but a really powerful way to working!
Quasar Science
Our friends at Quasar Science had a booth and were demonstrating Image-Based lighting.
Their big announcement is a new firmware that (among other things) unlocks many new color spaces, which is necessary for proper color management.
Lite Gear
Last, but not least was LiteGear Inc. , I didn't get a chance to stop by their booth personally, but they were also using Live FX to do pixel mapping on their lights.
