I’ve heard many different meanings of forgiveness. These two really struck a chord with me.

I think back to my difficult divorce while leaving a very toxic marriage. Dealing with tough lawyers and a difficult partner was already enough. On top of that, I was let down by loved ones whom I thought would be on my side but it was quite the opposite! I came from a strong religious and traditional background where cultural ties ran deep. Couples had very traditional roles and were supposed to stay together no matter what. So leaving my marriage was a big no no!
That was a confusing and very trying time in my life because it seemed like everyone had his or her own agenda and declared what was right for them...not right for me. Plus, I’d grown up around a culture where it was natural to seek elders’ approval so this weighed on me even deeper.
I heard things from loved ones like:
- You need to stick it out
- You are a failure
- You are a disappointment
- You are letting yourself down
While these comments stung to my core,???????? ???????????????????? ?????? ???????? ?????????????? ???? ???? ???????????? ?? ?????????? ?????? ?????????? ?????????? ???? ?????? ?????? ?????????????????? ???? ???????????? ????????. I was building self-reliance, intuitive muscles, embracing a new voice and identity. I was adopting new values and envisioning a new life while watching the old one go up in flames right before my very eyes.
I saw that the blessings I received from that experience was reclaiming my self-worth. I was letting go of approval seeking, and cultural limitations, while slowly gaining freedom to live life on my own terms. ???????????????????? ???? ???????? ?????? ?????????????? ?????????????????????? ???? ?????????? ???? ??????????.
Furthermore, in an interview, Maya Angelou said “when you forgive you free up energy to go do the things you want in life.” I truly believe that. Diving into forgiveness has allowed me to walk in grace and acceptance in life time and time again…. even in the face of strong opinions.
Lastly, I've learned that by practicing forgiveness relationships may be healed. By grace, the same people who once opposed you may also come around to support you later. Making the journey even more enriching. I’m living proof of that!
