On the 21 November 2024, CIMR hosted a workshop for CIMR’s current, visiting and former PhD students. We thank Emma Palmer Foster and Matteo Capriolo for organizing and chairing the event. Matteo joins CIMR this term as a visiting PhD student from the University of Milano-Bicocca where he is undertaking a PhD in Public Administration. Ten current and former PhD students participated. There were two sessions.
?The ten contributors are Emma Palmer Foster, Filipe Martins Gomes , Jacqueline Winstanley FRSA , Maja Savic, Maryam Ghorbankhani , Matteo Capriolo, Ning Baines , Peter Jelfs, Sam Sherwood, Thanos Fragkandreas .?
Session 1 highlights
Empirical questions: This session explored the problem of measurement faced during PhD projects. Specific examples included measuring tax complexity and its impact on business investments and competitiveness and the challenges of measuring regional innovation systems. ?
Methodological challenges: Participants discussed the challenges of coming up against philosophical traditions, yet agreed the importance of a strong philosophical underpinning to research to solve problems effectively.? ?
PhD journeys: There was much appreciation in this session of the difficulties of maintaining momentum, managing time effectively, and dealing with the emotional aspects of juggling multiple commitments while undertaking PhD research. ?

Session 2 highlights
Empirical questions: This session explored the concept of ‘economic impact’ acknowledging its broad and heterogeneous nature. Participants discussed the challenges of measuring and generalizing economic impact, particularly at the local level.? ?
Methodological challenges: The group discussed merits and challenges of both qualitative and quantitative research methods, emphasizing the importance of choosing the right method for the research question and the value of mixed methods approaches.? ?
PhD journeys: The session concluded with reflections on the PhD journey, with participants sharing their experiences and advice on managing the challenges of PhD studies, staying motivated, and finding support networks.?
We enjoyed the workshop very much and hope that CIMR contributes positively to your PhD journey. ?
