CIBSE #NetZeroWeek Update
As we come towards the end of #NetZeroWeek , we thought we would take this opportunity to highlight some of the resources and ongoing work that CIBSE is involved in.
CIBSE has long been active on the topic of climate change mitigation and adaptation and linking it to building performance. In July 2019 CIBSE produced its first Climate Action Plan , mapping our current and planned activities in the areas where we have a duty and the ability to act as a professional institution. Led by Julie Godefroy, CIBSE Head of Sustainability, we are committed to reviewing our plan regularly. ?
We seek collaboration with others for more effective action on climate change. We are members of the CIC Climate Change Committee and are signatories to the 2019 cross-industry pledge coordinated by the Edge and the CIC cross-industry climate action plan. In November 2021, for COP26, we produced an implementation plan , and are now working on the implementation as detailed in the plan.
Reaching Net Zero requires several new measures and innovative solutions. CIBSE works collaboratively to understand and respond to the challenges presented by the transition to Net Zero Carbon and meeting the 2050 targets.
Resources such as TM65 Embodied Carbon Calculator have been developed by CIBSE in collaboration with Elementa Consulting Ltd. to support consultants, researchers, and manufacturers. TM65 methodology has been widely adopted, providing a framework for consistency in embodied carbon calculations and reporting.
“Fantastic news from CIBSE. They’ve produced a digital Embodied Carbon Calculator tool that will help engineers and contractors estimate the embodied carbon within buildings.
We have recently added #embodiedcarbon calculations to our document library according to CIBSE's TM65 calculation. Nearly 20 different products have been assessed under this method, with more on the way!
We are here to support the challenge ahead and be part of the solution in making both existing buildings and new building stock fit for the future.”
David Archer, National M&E Manager, Living Environmental System at Mitsubishi Electric
TM65.1 Embodied carbon in building services: residential heating investigates the embodied carbon impact of heating and hot water equipment and strategies for use in residential buildings.
Following industry consultation, CIBSE and the London Energy Transformation Initiative (LETI) , published guidance aiming to provide the language to facilitate a unified and collaborative transition to net zero. This was led by Julie Godefroy, CIBSE Head of Sustainability and Clara Bagenal George, founder of LETI and Associate at Elementa Consulting, and building on definitions from the Whole Life Carbon Network (WLCN) and LETI.
CIBSE is working to deliver the UK’s first Net Zero Carbon Building Standard as part of a coalition of leading industry bodies. The UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard will enable industry to robustly prove their built assets are net zero carbon and in line with our nation’s climate targets. Alongside CIBSE, the steering group includes representation from Better Buildings Partnership (BBP), BRE, the Carbon Trust, Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), LETI, Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC).
"CIBSE is delighted to be contributing our expertise to support this important initiative on Net Zero. It is urgently needed to deliver a clear standard to demonstrate real outcomes and give trust to clients, owners and occupiers. We look forward to working with the wide range of parties committed to deliver the standard."
Kevin Mitchell, CIBSE President and Mott McDonald Global Practice Leader, Building Services Engineering.
CIBSE continues to provide guidance relating to heat decarbonisation, including AM16 Heat pump installations for multi-unit residential buildings (2021) and AM17: Heat pumps for large non-domestic buildings (2022) which was sponsored by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

In 2020 we set up a working group on electrical engineering for net zero which led to the development of TM67 Electrification of buildings for net zero (2021).
We contributed to the 2021 LETI Climate Emergency Retrofit Guide and have started work, with LETI, on the non-domestic workstream.
Since their creation in 2012, the CIBSE Building Performance Awards have required in-use performance data, a truly leading requirement across industry. Each year, we analyse the awards submissions, working to improve data quality to reflect growing industry readiness for more extensive performance disclosure. CIBSE continues to work with the RIBA to align the sustainability criteria in our awards and to enable RIBA awards in-use data to feed into CIBSE benchmarks database. We seek to collaborate with others to better align requirements from sustainability awards across institutions.
Following the introduction of an Embodied Carbon Award in 2021, this year’s CIBSE Building Performance Awards will see the expansion of this category into two awards, one for consultants/project teams, and one for manufacturers and suppliers. We are also increasing the level of information we request on embodied carbon.
Finally, in celebration of CIBSE’s 125 anniversary, Kevin Mitchell, CIBSE President launched the #CIBSE125Challenges . The aim is to encourage action, communication and collaboration, inspiring those who are new to our industry, as well as raising our profile more widely and inspiring people to join us from a wide range of backgrounds to ensure our industry reflects the communities we serve.
There are five challenges in total:
CELEBRATE – your building services icon
INSPIRE – future engineers
BOOST – development of an early career engineer
SHARE – your building services story
ENGAGE – with your peers to share knowledge & fight climate change
As Building Services Engineers our work is essential to ensuring buildings are safe, comfortable, healthy, and sustainable places to live and work.
