CIArb YMG Half-Year Recap (January-June 2024)

This week, the CIArb Young Members Group (YMG) of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) will hold the CIArb YMG Annual Global Conference 2024, Adapt and Thrive: Succeeding in an Evolving Arbitration Landscape, in Toronto, Canada on 19-20 September 2024. Before that, let us take a look back at some of the highlights and activities of the various CIArb YMG branches and chapters during the first half of 2024.

? Theominique D. Nottage, MCIArb and Travis Gonyou, MCIArb started their terms as Chair and Vice Chair of the CIArb Young Members Group (YMG) Global Steering Committee.

? Dr. Christian Santos, ACIArb (Australia), Angelique Nelis (Australia), Asha Rajan (France), Serap Müftüo?lu (Germany), and Earvin Delgado (United States) were appointed to the CIArb YMG Global Steering Committee.

? CIArb YMG East Asia Branch ( Ciarb (EAB) YMG ) co-organized an evening panel discussion titled, Evidence Preparation in Construction Arbitration, with ICE HKA G&S last 16 January 2024. It was a hybrid event held simultaneously through Zoom and in Chan Ma Ching Heung Lecture Theatre, 香港都会大学 (Jockey Club Campus). It featured David Feehan , James Johnson , Warren Suen and Richard Poon .

? CIArb Australia Young Members Group (CIArb YMG Australia), together with Herbert Smith Freehills and Clifford Chance , co-hosted the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Australia Vis Pre-Moot in Sydney, Australia last 19-20 February 2024. The final round was chaired by Hon. James Allsop AC .

? CIArb. Abuja Chapter of the CIArb Nigeria and CIArb Nigeria Young Members Group (YMG) held a webinar on the topic, Measures for Addressing Current Ethical Issues in Arbitration Practice, last 23 February 2024. Ozioma Izuora (FCIArb) was the guest speaker of the webinar, and the event was moderated by Daniel Ihueze .

? CIArb YMG Scottish and the Ciarb Scottish Branch launched its Pupillage and Mentoring Scheme last 29 February 2024 at HKA Global Ltd., in Glasgow, Scotland. Lisa Cattanach and Kahleen Crawford , Convenors of the Mentoring and Pupillage Scheme, as well CIArb YMG Scottish Co-Chairs, Lisa Dobbin and Amy Pairman , entertained questions and shared knowledge with the CIArb YMG Scottish members on how to get involved.

? The CIArb YMG co-sponsored a hybrid seminar with Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Thailand Branch) titled, The Art of Advocacy: Skills that Make a Difference held in SCL Nishimura & Asahi Limited last 29 February 2024. This event was moderated by Thawalkorn Pattanachote.

? CIArb YMG EAB and HK45 , in celebration of this year's International Women's Day, held a panel discussion themed, Inspire Inclusion, last 1 March 2024 at the HKIAC.

? Emuobonuvie A. Majemite was elected as the Chair of CIArb YMG Nigeria Ciarb Nigeria .

? Ciarb YMG EAB hosted a fireside chat featuring The Hon. Geoffrey Ma, GBM, KC, SC, former Chief Justice of Hong Kong last 16 April 2024. The event was held in HKIAC .

? CIArb YMG EAB - Vietnam Chapter organized a online seminar titled, Breakfast Chit-Chat: Studying Abroad, Scholarships, and Arbitration, last 13 April 2024. The event was led by CIArb YMG EAB - Vietnam Chapter Chair Hieu Nguyen, FCIArb , Truong (Ryan) Le , and Ha My Linh ,ACIArb .

? CIArb. Abuja Chapter held a virtual debate on the topic, Arbitration promotes efficiency at the expense of transparency in legal proceedings, last 24 April 2024. This event featured panelists Emokiniovo Dafe-Akpedeye and Akoth Aluoch, MCIArb, and was moderated by Samantha Masengeli , MCIArb.

? CIArb YMG Brazil elected its new New Directive Board for the 2024-2026 Biennium. Bruno Hellmeister Lico Canal was elected as Chair, Luis Henrick Bussola Pereira, was elected as Vice Chair, and Victor Luis Portela Rocha and Gabriella Celidonio Paschoa, FCIArb were elected as Counselors.

CIArb YMG Malawi, together with CIArb Malawi and Maxson Arnold & Associates, co-organized a seminar titled, The Role of ADR in Current Legal Practice: How It Stacks Up Against Litigation, held last 16 May 2024 at the University of Malawi - UNIMA. This in-person event was hosted by Alice Malunga and Lungile Jere.

? CIArb YMG EAB hosted Joint Chamber YNetwork Drinks with The The British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and AustCham Hong Kong last 24 May 2024 at the Yurakucho in Central, Hong Kong.

? CIArb Young Members Group, UAE , held a quiz night and networking session at the Lighthouse Club Dubai last 30 May 2024. Kevin Southam served as the quizmaster of the event.

? The CIArb YMG, together with Careers in Arbitration, organized the Arbitration Pub Quiz held in London, United Kingdom last 5 June 2024 during the London International Disputes Week (LIDW). The event was held in Martha's Bar at The Williamson's Tavern, and was led by quizmasters Amanda Lee FCIArb, Baptiste Rigaudeau, MCIArb and Trisha Mitra-Veber. All three quizmasters were Past Chairs and/or members of the CIArb YMG Global Steering Committee. Kevin Huber and Adrien Canivet took home the trophy.

? Aitor Santana Trujillo MCIArb was appointed as the CIArb YMG Representative for the Ciarb European Branch .

? CIArb YMG EAB - Taiwan Chapter, together with Chen & Chang, Attorneys-at-Law and the ADR Committee of the Taiwan Bar Association, held an in-person event titled, Cultivating a Career in International Arbitration, last 13 June 2024 at the Taiwan Bar Association. The seminar was hosted by the outgoing and incoming Convenors of the CIArb Taiwan Chapter, Dr. 陈海伦 and Alison S.Y. CHANG FCIArb . Dr. Pei-Jung Li , CIArb YMG Taiwan Chair, moderated the event.

? CIArb YMG India of the CIArb India Branch held their inaugural Arbitration Expert Interview Series last last 17 June 2024. The first edition featured Retd. Justice Ramesh D. Dhanuka. The interview was moderated by Chinmayee Pendse, FCIArb and Hussain Somji, FCIArb .

? CIArb Young Members Group, Zambia held a webinar titled, The Role of Personal Branding in Building your Career as an Arbitration Professional, last 17 June 2024. The panel included Amanda Lee FCIArb, Nakasamba Tikambenji Banda-Chanda, Valerie Kawangu Chiyombwe FCIArb, and the event was moderated by Muleba Joseph Chitupila MCIArb.

? CIArb YMG EAB hosted a lunchtime webinar titled, The Moral Foundations of Arbitration, last 27 June 2024. The webinar hosted Prof. Shahla Ali , Professor of Law and Associate Dean (International) at 香港大学 Faculty of Law and Director of the LLM Program in Arbitration and Dispute Resolution.

CIArb YMG Brazil, in partnership with USP - Universidade de S?o Paulo and University of Miami School of Law , held an event titled, Produ??o Preliminar da Prova – Diálogos entre Brasil, EUA, e Inglaterra, which discussed the differences, nuances, and experiences of practitioners in Brazil, the United States, and the United Kingdom with preliminary evidence. The event was held last 28 June 2024. The panel included Prof. Flávio Yarshell, Pedro Martini FCIArb and Tatiana Ferri, and was moderated by Christiane Reis.

? CIArb YMG North America, chaired by Eugenie Rogers FCIArb , and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators - NAB , regularly hold webinars and other events that CIArb YMG members based in the United States and Mexico can participate in. Previous speakers include DeAndra Roaché, FCIArb. , Dr. CHIKA A. , Deborah Enix-Ross , Nelson E. T. , and others.

? CIArb EAB - Philippines Chapter, whose YMG chapter is co-chaired by Jay Patrick Santiago MCIArb , regularly holds monthly fellowships. These fellowships are co-presented with the Philippine Institute of Arbitrators (PIArb) and Quisumbing Torres . Some speakers they had this year include Jared P. Amoroso , Jose Angelo David , Daniel S. Hofile?a , Jonathan Lim , Michael Arada Greenop and others.

? Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb) Ghana Chapter features a member of the chapter every week on its LinkedIn page including student members and under-40 members. CIArb Young Members Group, Zambia also features is members on its LinkedIn page.
