CIArb Johannesburg Conference 19-20 July 2017

Very excited to announce that Prof. Dr Nayla Obeid has launched this morning the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators' African conference, taking place today and tomorrow in Johannesburg, on the theme of the Synergy and Divergence between Common law and Civil law in international arbitration. This conference is under the high patronage of His Excellency Mr John Jeffrey, Deputy Minister of Justice & Constitutional Development in South Africa.

I am very proud to have participated in the coordination of this unique event and to be speaking tomorrow on the topic of investment arbitration in Africa.

This conference is the second of a series of three conferences on the issue of the Common-civil law dichotomy in international arbitration. The first one took place in Duba? in March 2017 and the last one will take place in Paris in December 2017.

Very distinguished speakers from the Continent and from all around the world will discuss hot topics in international arbitration, and propose practical solutions and legislative improvements to bridge the gap between legal traditions, and ensure that international arbitration reaches its full potential and promotes both economic growth and economic development on the African Continent.

In particular, the following personalities will be sharing their expertise with us during these two days:

- His Excellency Mr Abubakar Malami SAN, Minister of Justice of the Federal Republic of Nigeria;

- The Honourable Justice Ishaq Bello, Honourable Chief Judge of the Federal Republic of Nigeria;

- Justice Charles Kajimanga, Judge of the Supreme Court of Zambia;

- Justice Geoffrey Kiryabwire, Justice of the Court of Appeal of Uganda;

- Justice William S Mweemba, Zambia High Court Judge and chair of the Zambian branch of CIArb;

- Judge Joyce Aluoch, Judge of the International Criminal Court and former Judge of the Court of Appeal in Kenya; and

- Judge Fergus Blackie, Chair of the South African branch and former judge of the High Court of Zimbabwe
