Exciting News: We Evolve with A?New Name!

We are excited to announce that,?as part of our journey towards growth,?the Center for Health, Work & Environment is now officially the?Centers?for Health, Work & Environment. This change reflects the?evolution?and breadth of our?work, leading multiple centers, programs,?and initiatives focused on improving worker health, safety, and well-being.?This name change will be reflected?in our website and other?branding items in stages.

Visit to the Capital to Represent Colorado Workplaces at the White House National Recovery Event

Assistant Director at CHWE, David Shapiro represented the Colorado Recovery Friendly Workplace Initiative at a White House roundtable for National Recovery Month. CHWE is leading efforts to support employees in recovery from substance use, working with over 100 Colorado businesses to foster recovery-friendly workplaces. @ about CHWE’s impact on the national stage.


Highlighting the 2024 Awardee of the Mountain & Plains Education and Research Center (MAP ERC) Grant: Will Zou

Our MAP ERC has awarded a pilot grant to Will Zou, a doctoral student at Colorado School of Public Health , to study occupational health risks in the food truck industry. Zou’s project focuses on air pollutant exposure faced by food truck workers, a group that is often overlooked in occupational health research. Empowering Latino Workers and Employers Through Health and Safety Initiatives

CHWE has partnered with the The Latino Chamber of Commerce to create the Latino Workforce and Employer Wellness Empowerment Program. This initiative addresses health and safety disparities for Latino workers and small business owners in Colorado, offering culturally relevant training. Recent workshops are already helping participants apply new practices in their workplaces.?Read more.


Addressing Alcohol Use and Safety at Sea: The National Academies and?Total Worker Health?

David Shapiro?spoke at the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, sharing insights on addressing alcohol misuse in the maritime industry. Highlighting the Total Worker Health? approach, Shapiro emphasized integrating safety and well-being strategies for maritime workers. Three new project grants awarded to Dr. Natalie Schwatka

Natalie Schwatka ,?PhD, MS, assistant professor for the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health, received?three?new grants:

  1. AHRQ R03 grant as PI to study Total Worker Health in community health centers.
  2. 2. NIOSH R21 as a Co-I (Marisha Burden, MD, PI from School of Medicine) to study the financial impact of hospitalist burnout.
  3. A 5-year NIOSH funded project as part of the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR) to develop, implement, evaluate, and disseminate a toolkit, the Collaborative Leadership for Safety and Health in Construction (CL-SHC), designed to enhance the skills and practices of managers, supervisors, and workers, enabling them to collaborate effectively in developing and implementing solutions.


Welcome, Olivia Zarella, DrPH, MPH!

Please join us in welcoming Olivia Zarella, DrPH, MPH,?to the Centers.?Hired as a new?Research Associate for Implementation Science, Olivia will contribute to the growing work across CHWE, focusing?on conducting research and designing and implementing interventions to benefit workers. With 7+ years of experience in public health and a doctorate in EOH, she brings expertise in epidemiology, infectious diseases, and environmental health with work spanning health education and policy development. ?


CHWE?receives Opioid Overdose Prevention and Response training?

Jennifer Place, MA, LPC, LAC, NC of the Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention, hosted an Opioid Overdose Prevention and Response Training for CHWE. This presentation equipped CHWE?with the knowledge about how to use a life-saving medication called?Naloxone.
