The Churn - Issue #2

Does anyone remember when I launched The Churn, a rich dose of monthly HR tech and innovation news in December 2021? Well, here we are with part two… they say it’s better late than never!?
I promise to be better from now on. I finally got my act together and plan to release news (and, in future episodes, product information, customer stories and HR tech learning tips) on a regular basis. Watch this space, as they say,
Hopefully, our take on what’s been going on will have you at the edge of your seat. If you have any feedback, let me know. I want to iterate and improve what I deliver to you. You know what to do if you think the improvements you want are beyond me.
Enough of me rambling. Let’s get on with it.
I've segmented the below into "Must Reads" and "AI/ChatGPT Stuff", as there's a lot of the latter (and I'm very excited about it), so it probably deserves its own section for the foreseeable.
Must Reads
Global HR – the Drakestar report
The Drakestar Q1 2023 report is out, from Ralf Philipp Hofmann and Jim Holzer .
You can download it here – and as usual, it’s an interesting read. The report reveals that a whopping $13.5 billion was invested in HR tech in 2022, with more than 1,300 transactions. Trends reveal that employees remain in the driver’s seat – resulting in the accelerated adoption of digital hiring processes and that the HR tech stack will continue to consolidate from point solutions to ecosystems.
Tech trends for 2023
This brilliant piece (resource?) from Deloitte shows the tech trends hitting all industries in 2023. They cover AI, the metaverse, automation and how the tech workforce will be reimagined post-pandemic. Well worth a read.?
Another great article on this topic can be found by Gartner here – they look at nine key points for the future of work trends in 2023, claiming that organisations face historic challenges: a competitive talent landscape, an exhausted workforce, and pressure to control costs. Their tips are really useful. What do you think?
Collab software
According to this article by Emily He of Microsoft, employees are searching for tools that enable collaboration seamlessly, automate repetitive work, and guide with insights which can be customised for specific business challenges. What are your thoughts? Is that true? Do you have any examples?
Supporting diverse teams
Here on the ever-helpful HiBob.com site, we’re given lots of advice regarding supporting diverse teams with sufficient HR solutions. This is very relevant in today’s ‘diverse and distributed’ world of work. This practical piece clearly talks about the answers to some of the ever-growing challenges businesses face.

Talent Acquisition Leadership?
Such a helpful piece here from our friends at SmartRecruiters – this article shows how five TA leaders used tech to deliver their strategic goals. If you think the challenge at your company is insurmountable, let the talent acquisition leaders whose stories are shared prove you wrong.
AI/ChatGPT Stuff
ChatGPT challenges
We all enjoy having a play around with ChatGPT (if only it’d have been around when I had to submit school homework!), but is it a bit premature for recruiters to be using it as a serious source of talent spotting?
This article from Kevin Wheeler and his crew at Future of Talent argues that although automation software should be encouraged for recruiters, it’s not error-proof and should be used with caution. What are your thoughts? Any success or even horror stories? Let us know in the comments!
There’s another great piece about ChatGPT here – where it’s revealed nearly half of 11,793 professionals (43%) who responded to a recent survey reported using AI tools, including ChatGPT, for work-related tasks. Most of those professionals (70 per cent) do so without their bosses' knowledge. Fascinating data. Check out the article for further tips on how Chat GPT and other AI software can impact your business – and what you should be aware of!
Generative AI
Josh Bersin argues here that AI won’t be perfect but will be a total game-changer in HR –?his views are always worth checking out. Josh examines how Generative AI and Large Language Models help the HR world. His examples and insight will certainly make you think about how you operate. It’s fascinating how fast things are progressing and developing.
AI WILL dominate recruiting?
In this thought-provoking piece, Dr. John Sullivan talks about the need to understand and then visualise how AI will quickly dominate recruiting.
Of all the articles I've read this month –? this has been the one that's made me go ‘wow’. It's very theoretical, but for those that know tech and recruiting - you'll understand just how AI-disrupted recruiting (and HR) is going to be.?
Wrapping up ??
Hopefully, issue 2 of The Churn has hit the mark. I know I can't please all of the people all of the time, so please let me know (by commenting) what you think of this issue and what else you would like to see in future issues.
Also, if you have your own beautifully crafted articles, news, podcast episodes, events - or anything else HR tech and innovation themed - that you'd like to be included in issue 3, let me know. We've room for growth.
It's not going to be a 15-month wait for the next one. I promise.
See you next time!
