THE CHURCHILL ARMS - A LITERARY LONDON PUB

Yesterday, after three days of eating turkey, Jo ?and I felt like some Thai food for lunch.

The Churchill Arms dates from 1750, it is run by Fullers and claims to be the first London pub to serve Thai food - going back to 1988.

The outside of the pub is known for being bedecked in flowers and/or flags. Except in December when there is a lavish Christmas display - trees and lights. Christmas walk to the Churchill Arms .

Inside, there is much Winston Churchill and World War II memorabilia, pictures and posters plus chamber pots suspended from the ceiling. Apparently, Winston Churchill ’s grandparents - the 7th Duke of Marlborough and Lady Frances Anne Emily Vane - drank here in the 1800s. More recently, My London report Daniel Craig and Prince William have frequented pub.

Churchill was a prolific writer. Wikipedia have an entry for Winston Churchill as writer . He wrote a novel (Savrola ), two biographies, memoirs (e.g.?The Second World War ), histories (e.g. A History of the English-Speaking Peoples ), speeches (e.g. Arms and the Covenant ) and numerous press articles. Churchill received the?Nobel Prize in Literature ?in 1953.

We arrived at 12.15 and sat at a small table near the main entrance. The table beside ours was reversed for Dante from 12.30. I imagined sitting next to the Italian poet, writer and philosopher.

Jo went to the bar for a ? of Frontier for me and ? of Guinness for herself. I went the kitchen to order two number 5s: 'Pad Ka-Prae' stir fry (the pork version for me / the veg version for Jo) with red chillies & fresh basil, and accompanied by jasmine rice.

Dante arrived but not the great Italian - always unlikely given 2021 was the 700th anniversary of his death - this Dante was a brown cocker spaniel.

(To wrap things up: The last of the leftover turkey was finished in a sandwich yesterday evening.)

I pass it all the time and enjoy seeing people take pictures of the outside. It is like a backdrop, a folly, a small nudge to just go look up the man’s history…British history. I must go in…someday.
