The Church where I worked in Tanzania

This is the Church that I went to when I worked for Barrick Gold at their Bulyanhulu Mine in Tanzania, Africa. This Church is located about 1 KM from the small town / village of Kakola or about 100 KM Southwest of the city of Mwanza. It is also about 1 KM from the mine site where I worked at Bulyanhulu Mine. I took all of the photos in 2004. Of all the modern Churches in North America, this Church in my mind stands out as the best not because of the building but because of the people inside the building.
This photo is looking inside the Church.
This boy is gesturing for me to come inside the Church.
This photo is of some of the local children waiting for the service to start.
This is a photo of some of the local people waiting for the service to begin. As you can see in the photo, the Church is just about ready for the Minister to begin his service.
The man standing on the right is the Church Minister. He started giving his service in Swahili and when he realized that I did not understand the language he switched to speaking in English. Throughout the whole service he would switch back and forth from Swahili to English just because I was there.
This photo shows some of the local people preparing the Church for that days service.
I went into the Church at first because I was a bit nervous of the people in the small village of Kakola. After being inside the Church for a while I came to realize how friendly and generous the Tanzanian people really are. I was the only white person in the Church and everybody accepted me as if I was one of their own. The Minister even talked in English for a short time which made me feel part of a family in this new country I was working in. The one thing that really stands out for me is the generosity of the locale people. Here, most people are very poor but when the donation plate came around everybody donated something even though they had very little. I came to respect the Tanzanian people very much in the 5 years I worked their and I would not hesitate to recommend the county or the people to anybody thinking of visiting the country.

8 年Good reflection Charles, and good shots as well
Retired after 42yrs in maintenance.
8 年Nice to see pictures of Kakola brings back fawn memories . I too worked at Bulyanhulu for ~ 5yrs with the Maintenance dept (G.F. Fixed plant). When I was training then moved into a Supervisors position. I had a small home built in Kakola where my girl friend and I at the time now my wife lived together. I still remember getting up at 4:00am and having my Dala Dala driver waiting for me outside our home to bring me to the mine-site (rain our shine). Once I moved up to the G.F. position my girl friend and I moved into camp took up a home on site. I still miss the people and the weather. We have purchased property just outside of Mwanza and have plans on having our retirement home built there.

8 年Lovely story Charles Rozell. I was fortunate enough to spend some time in Buly running the small school on the mine site and later in the maintenance training center. Brings back fond memories of the people in the area. Thanks for sharing your experiences. We lived next door to Ed and Debbie.
