Chronicles of Quixotic - Chapter 5
CHAPTER 5
???????????When Zara left Merle’s apartment that morning for work, he was dressed, and she knew he would be leaving shortly.
????????????Merle detached his Kryztol for the main hall in Acacia. He surveyed the area through his Bizou and decided to enter near the staircase. Considering the time difference, he thought perhaps he could find out what had Valerian so upset before their audience. Concentrating, Merlin touched the Bizou with his mind. Swirling into a solid form, he made a quick survey of his surroundings. Acacia palace was not as large as Quixotic’s but still you could fit a small country within the walls of the ancient structure and grounds. As with any stone structure, it was dimly lit and damp. The main halls on the primary floor had fireplaces already blazing and servants scurrying about getting the morning started. Intentionally arriving near the sentry suited in armor and seeing the coast was clear he made a beeline for the stairs.
???????????“It won’t work, Merlin. I get up early, too,” Valerian announced, as he stepped off the staircase on the other side of the guard out of view.
???????????“So, where would you like to talk,” Merlin replied sheepishly, knowing he was caught.
???????????“Let’s go into the small library. I want some major privacy.” Valerian directed. “I’ll have someone bring us coffee.” Merlin dutifully followed him through the dimly lit, damp halls to the library.
???????????“First, you should know that Na'bila left the negotiations two riterions ago.” Valerian began. “Two young people came asking for her. They talked. She spoke with Saxon and then left without any explanation.”
???????????“I can’t force my mother to sit in this conference. Father can but not me,” Merlin responded curtly. “How did Saxon act when she spoke to him? Was he any different after she left?”
???????????“He kept looking at the couple, seemingly irritated, but he didn’t intervene. He politely made Na’bila’s apologies, stating that there were family matters in Quixotic demanding her attention. He continued to handle matters as he did when she was here. Their thoughts seem to run together. Who were those people?”
???????????“Probably my brother, Kyril and my ex-girlfriend, Janis; did the man have part of his ear missing?”
???????????“I don’t know! I don’t generally go around looking at people’s ears,” Valerian snorted. “Now, start filling me in from the time of the coronation in Majidah to who the girl is related to Eugene,” Valerian instructed.
???????????Merlin began as Valerian poured them each a cup of coffee and then they both got comfortable.
???????????“Immediately following Ty’nan’s coronation, King Neyvle died, and I was suddenly summoned to Quixotic. The reason I found out, after discovering several more deaths, was that I was now next in line for Quixotic’s throne. The Zyburg, governing entity of Quixotic, and my mother made an attempt to steal back the Emeraude Krustallos endangering Kandria in the process. Ty, Baron, and I rescued her. Actually, we rescued her twice, once from the Zyburg, and once from the Zuleika. We deposited her safely in Majidah, only to lose her completely to a mental death from the Emeraude and finally a physical death at her own hands. ?
???????????“Yes, I am deeply sorry about that, Merlin. If there had been any way to foresee the tragedy, I would have stopped Zay'doc myself,” Valerian consoled.
???????????Merlin continued, “Then I was preparing a rescue attempt for my father, but he escaped before we initiated the plan. You are aware of the events surrounding that incident. To date, Bishop Canon and the High Counsel have me under Royal Aegis safely tucked away on Earth until my coronation.”
???????????“Okay so far,” Valerian said. “I understand you have been in Majidah lately other than on a rescue mission.”
???????????“I was looking for Janis.”
???????????“Look, Merlin, we’re in the middle of Treaty negotiations. Your United Sovereignty council is also involved. There are lots of drastic changes. I’m trying to hold things together while you’re off making allies for Quixotic.”
???????????“I was not off making allies,” he snapped hotly. “I said I was looking for Janis. Anyway, my best friend rules of one of those sovereignties, and I am to be High King for the United Sovereignty. I control the entire realm. I will discuss politics at times,” he countered, irritated by the insinuation.
???????????“Whatever,” Valerian grumbled, giving him an aggravated look.
???????????“Valerian…” Merlin drawled meaningfully.
???????????“I know, I know,” Valerian grumbled. “You outrank me, okay. You’re still my nephew and presently under my authority.”
Merlin glared at his uncle.
“Look, that brings us to the girl.” Valerian changed the subject. “Who is she?”
???????????“She is not a topic open for discussion.”
???????????“According to Fallon she is of the Blood of Acacia, granddaughter to Eugene, Fallon’s grandson. The topic just got opened!” Valerian shouted.
???????????“She’s my concern and mine alone,” Merlin remarked sharply. “The affairs of Acacia or the Houses of Quixotic do not concern her. She’s no threat to you.”
???????????“How can you be so sure? Her grandfather is of Acacia. He could have desires of his own. I understand she’s a talented girl, ambitious and extremely smart.”
???????????Merlin could feel his anger mounting. “You will all stay away from her! Do you understand? At this rimt she is no concern of yours.”
???????????“As you wish, but watch yourself,” Valerian warned, again changing the subject. “Are you going to see your mother?”
???????????“I would prefer to see Saxon first and then decide if I need to see her,” Merlin answered, relieved to be addressing a new topic. “Is he staying within the palace?”
???????????“Yes, he is at the East End of the hall, last guest chambers. One more question before you leave. What about your Kryztol Bizou? Were your abilities enhanced before you were sent to Earth?”
???????????“Yes, by both Zyburg and Zuleika,” Merlin informed Valerian proudly. “Since I am from both Royal Families, the Entities felt it necessary to keep the balance. I’m still learning all that it is capable. I have watched you and Ty’nan use yours. I think mine is capable of greater mystical feats, especially with my sorcerer’s knowledge.”
???????????As Valerian stood and stretched, Merlin commented on the question concerning the previous night. “The girl you asked about, her name is Zara, and she is very special.”
???????????“Do you love her?” Valerian asked.
???????????Merlin stood, and he and Valerian regarded one another for a long moment. Never answering, Merlin departed. Walking up the stairs to Saxon’s Chambers, he reviewed all he and Valerian had discussed. After knocking and waiting a moment, Saxon answered.
???????????“Merlin welcome. Have you eaten?”
???????????“I’ve only had coffee most of the criterion.”
???????????“Then let me feed you while we chat.” With a casual gesturing, a table appeared spread with cheeses, meats, bread, and wine. Saxon, being Merlin’s half-brother on their mother’s side, was as an accomplished sorcerer as Merlin.
Merlin prepared himself two sandwiches and got straight to the point. “Who did mother leave with the other riterion?”
???????????“Kyril and Janis of course, I thought you could have figured that one out on your own.”
???????????“I suspected, but lately I do not jump to conclusions. What business could mother possibly have with the two of them?”
???????????“Merlin, our mother is determined to manipulate your life. She wants to see you as happy as possible. You are her favored son, you know that.”
???????????“Get to the point, Saxon,” Merlin urged, taking a bite of his sandwich.
???????????“She is trying to fix you up,” Saxon chuckled.
???????????“With Janis! She can just stop!” Merlin yelped, nearly choking. “Janis and I are through. Anyway, Kyril is in love with her.”
???????????“Kyril will do whatever Na'bila wishes in order to gain favor at this point,” Saxon pointed out.
???????????“Well, he had best not speak a stern word or raise a hand to Janis, she’ll hand him his head on a platter,” Merlin advised, without feeling.
???????????“Doesn’t take well to discipline, does she?” Saxon laughed. “No worries there. Kyril is about as dominant as a mouse.”
???????????“That’s true,” Merlin chuckled. Getting back on track he continued. “The last time Mother and the Forces began meddling in my affairs, it cost me someone for whom I dearly cared. They took her mind, and ultimately she took her life.”
???????????“Yes, I am sorry. I knew you cared for her. By the way, do you have any knowledge of the whereabouts of the Emeraude Krustallos since Kandria died?”
???????????“Who’s asking, Mother or you?” Merlin grumbled.
???????????“Both.”
???????????“No, I have no idea. Valerian has not mentioned its return and neither of the opposing Forces has displayed possession of it.”
???????????“Merlin, you will have to deal with Na'bila in this matter of your personal life on your own,” Saxon commented, then grinned, “at least she’s not after me right now.”
???????????Merlin chuckled at that then asked, “Any other coals in the fire with these three?”
???????????“I am not at liberty to say. As you know, I am also interested in your welfare,” Saxon reminded him.
???????????Merlin shot him a disgusted look. He was really getting nowhere fast. “How is the conference going?”
???????????“We are making slow progress. We have placed two lower houses in a better judicial position, and we are now working on some trade options within Sovereignties near Acacia. Rastus is still up for grabs, an age-old issue as you well know,” Saxon elaborated, as he prepared himself another sandwich.
???????????“I’m sure you will make adequate decisions in the best interest of the Realm,” Merlin reassured him, revealing his trust in Saxon’s ability. “How often has Ty’nan been present in the negotiations or is someone else representing Majidah?”
???????????“Ty’nan is here at least once a cycle, but there are three other delegates from Majidah advising him concerning his best interests.”
???????????“I didn’t realize he came so often,” Merlin reflected. “I was thinking...” Merlin broke off in mid-sentence as the chill of a Kryztol contact entered his mind. Econs later he could see Valerian in his chambers on the third floor.
???????????“Merlin are you still with Saxon,” Valerian asked.
???????????“Yes sir.”
???????????“I have just sent Fallon with Sebastian to look into a minor disturbance in Quiot. With Na'bila gone, and now Fallon, I want you to sit in on the conference for the next few riterion. No arguments!” Valerian ordered, and abruptly terminated the contact.
???????????“That takes care of the problem of seeing Mother,” Merlin said, glancing at Saxon. “I have just been ordered to sit in on the conference until either Na'bila or Fallon return.”
???????????“I heard. The next session is not for several rions. If you would like I can bring you up to date on most of the discussion,” Saxon offered.
???????????“Yes, I will need you to do that. First, I would like to go to my chambers and relax, if you will excuse me for, shall we say one rion?”
???????????On his way upstairs, Merlin was beginning to feel terribly used. As soon as he entered the chambers, he relieved himself of several cups of coffee, ran a comb through his hair, and then settled into his favorite chair. Rifling through his Kryztols, he removed Ty’nan’s. As contact became clear, Ty was again standing in the kitchen at Majidah.
???????????“Ty, all you do as King - is eat!” Merlin quipped.
???????????Ty swallowed, laughing. “Hey, running a country is hungry work, just wait, your turn is coming! Where are you?”
???????????“Acacia.”
???????????“Oh-oh, problems?” Ty’s asked, his cheerful expression shadowing quickly.
???????????“Not really. Valerian insisted I bring him up to date since your coronation. So, how are affairs in your neck of the woods?”
???????????“Quiet, Aby'gayl is in Yetta visiting family. Mother has gone to the Milieu Citadel to speak with Proctor. They left me to hold down the fort,” Ty answered, his sky-blue eyes revealing his devilish amusement. “Why, need a favor?”
???????????“Yeah, I’m stuck here for a few riterions. Could you go help Zara at Mirrors by the Sea? She’s still moving equipment and pulling wire.”
???????????“What about Barry?”
???????????“He’s useless,” Merlin grumbled. “Besides, you could keep an eye on him around Zara.”
???????????“Ooooh, competition!” Ty laughed
???????????“Not even close. I just don’t want him alone with her. Maybe you can get Mr. Miller to send Peterman over to help; anything,” Merlin suggested.
???????????“I’ll see what I can do for you, Mr. Jealousy.” Ty teased.
???????????“Thanks, Ty’nan,” Merlin said, and popping the Kryztol loose from his Bizou, Merlin broke the contact.
????????????As Merlin worried the delicate Kryztols between his fingers, his thoughts turned to Zara. She should be at work about now. He wondered if he reached through the fabric of time for a cell phone if it would work from where he was. Probably not, he shrugged to himself; nothing else did. Sliding down, he rested his head on the back of the chair, closing his eyes. His thoughts filled with memories of Zara and Valerian’s question, “Do you love her?” A tingling settled on his mind as he daydreamed.
???????????“Merlin.” A familiar voice came, jolting him back to reality.
???????????“Yes Father,” he replied, disappointed that the tingling was from the Kryztol contact.
???????????“Has Valerian talked with you about sitting in on the conferences for a few riterions?”
???????????“Yes, among other things.” Merlin disclosed with a frown. “He is not at all happy about the discovery of new relatives.”
???????????“True.” Fallon reflected. “He was aware of Eugene but had forgotten. The new knowledge that Eugene reproduced was slightly unsettling to him. What did you say to him?”
???????????“That Zara is off limits, that’s what I said to him!” Merlin proclaimed emphatically.
???????????“How is Zara anyway?” Fallon asked, amused at his son.
???????????“Mmm... fine,” Merlin answered, unconsciously smiling.
???????????“Did he talk to you about your mother leaving the conference?”
???????????“Yes. I have spoken with Saxon about that. He assures me it is strictly family matters. Preparation for the coronation, things like that.”
???????????“Good. I’m sorry you are stuck here for now.”
???????????“I will stay as long as possible. Have a successful journey Father,” Merlin bid as the contact faded.
?
???????????Sunday night finally made it. Merle should be home, and Zara could hardly wait. Tonight, was the first night she hadn’t seen Barry hanging around Danny’s. Friday and Saturday night, she left at odd times just to avoid him.
???????????Tonight, Danny asked if she could close for him. Betty was feeling bad, and he was going to take her home early. How could she say no?
????????????At midnight she was encouraging the last patrons out the door so she could lock up. Moving the money to the safe she checked the restrooms, turned out the lights, and headed briskly out the back door. The moment the door locked shut, her worst fears materialized.
????????????“Now, maybe we can finish that discussion,” Barry sneered, slipping around in front of her, gradually backing her against the closed door.
???????????“Why hadn’t Danny fixed the lights back here,” she muttered angrily. Her bike was on the other side of the lot, under the streetlight; naturally.
???????????“You want to talk a little first, Baby?” He offered, trickling his cold, slender fingers down her bare arm.
???????????“I want to leave is what I want,” she demanded, quivering involuntarily from his reptile-like touch.
???????????“Shh,” He hushed putting his finger on her lips.
???????????Gross, he even sounded like a snake. Balling her fist at her side, she gathered all her strength and - Whap! That left hook got him. Unfortunately, she didn’t have enough space to build any momentum and it didn’t knock him out.
???????????“Why you little...” was all she heard before he slapped her hard across the face. She staggered and instantly he had her arms pinned to the wall. As he leaned toward her leering, her knee met his unprotected groin! That backed him up, but she still hadn’t stopped him.
???????????“You’ll pay for that,” he gasped, raising his hand to slap her again. It only took a split second for him to realize he was looking down the barrel of her thirty-eight detectives special, with the hammer pulled back. In that same sobering instant of realization, a huge hand locked down on his shoulder, jerking him around. The next instant Barry was pinned against the wall a foot off the ground.
???????????“Zara, what’s going on here?” Her rescuer’s booming voice rang through the night. It was the man who had been asking about Ty a few weeks earlier.
???????????“I can’t breathe,” Barry wheezed, as he dangled helplessly.
???????????“What’s going on?” the stranger repeated.
???????????“I made a mistake, man, give me a break,” Barry croaked.
???????????By now she had recovered to whisper, “make him leave.” ?
????????????With incredible strength, the man literally threw Barry across the parking lot. Scrambling to his feet, Barry kept on going, his pounding footsteps echoing in the night.
????????????Zara was shaking as the stranger reached over and gently took the gun out of her hand, releasing the hammer. Pulling her close, he tilted her head to one side looking at her face.
???????????“He slapped you pretty hard. You, okay?” he asked in a velvety, rich baritone.
???????????Shaking like a leaf, she nodded. Tenderly he put his arms around her, drawing her to his muscular chest in a brotherly protective embrace.
???????????“Thank you,” she managed to utter, reluctantly moving from his comforting arms. “I don’t even know your name. Hey, how did you know my name,” she exclaimed, suddenly in a panic all over again.
???????????“Slow down.” He laughed. “Ty’nan told me yours, and mine is Baron. I’m looking for Ty again. Last time I told you he and I were together the next day. So here I am again and lucky for you, I think.” He looked at the gun he held in his fist, released the trigger, then handed it to her.
???????????“I haven’t seen him in a few days; I think he’s gone on business. My grandfather might know how to reach him. He and Merle discuss a lot of their work with him. Why don’t you follow me to the house, and we’ll see what we can find out?”
???????????“I... aaaa... don’t have a car...aaaa… I walked from a friend’s place,” he stammered, watching her tuck her gun into the back of her jeans.
???????????“That’s okay, you can ride with me. I’m sure Grandpa will be able to tell you something. Come on, my bike’s over under the streetlight.”
???????????When they got to the motorcycle, Baron walked admiringly around it then looked at her.
She had pulled her hair back in a quick braid and as they got under the streetlight. He reached up, tilting her head toward the light.
???????????“He really left his mark on you. You sure you’re, okay?” he asked, rubbing the back of his hand over her cheek.
???????????“Stings a bit.” She winced. “Here put this helmet on; we can talk through these,” she said, showing him the headsets. They settled on the bike and left the small parking lot. He didn’t say much on the way, and she was sort of glad. Her thoughts were on what had just happened. She was wishing Merle were here and glad he wasn’t at the same time. How could she tell him about what just happened? She knew she shouldn’t have been out there alone, consequences.
????????????Her face was still stinging when they pulled around the corner to the house. Merle had parked his car parked out front. Her heart leaped and sank at the same time.
???????????“You’re in luck, Baron. That’s Merle’s car. He’s here and probably Ty too.” ?
???????????As Zara pulled the bike into the yard, she saw Merle and Ty standing on the porch. Most likely waiting for her, since Merle knew exactly what time she would be pulling in, and she was over thirty minutes late. Taking off her helmet, she headed for the door with Baron close behind, hoping for the best.
???????????“Hi honey, I was getting worried about you,” Merle said, as she reached the top step. They kissed and as she stepped back. The porch light reflected, and he saw her face.

???????????“What happened to you,” he exclaimed, glaring at Baron. “Are you okay?”
???????????“It wasn’t me!” Baron defended. “Some tall, skinny fellow had her against the wall. He had already slapped her before I could get over to them.”
???????????Merle held her at arm’s length. “Who,” he demanded as his eyes blazed with anger. “What the hell were you doing out there alone?” His tone getting sharper. “Where was Danny?”
???????????Zara’s eyes flashed with rage and then with hurt so profound that he backed up a step.
???????????“It was Barry,” she answered evenly, not even clarifying that Danny had to leave early to take his ailing wife home. She paused, her eyes, melting into total devastation, never left his until she pushed past him into the house.
He didn’t watch her delicious backside disappear down the hall, his favorite pastime, his returned anger simmering just below the surface as he turned to Ty.
???????????“You blew it, lover boy,” Ty commented. Merle glared at him then turned his focus on Baron.
???????????“What happened?” he demanded.
???????????“Man, I knew it was Zara when I saw her hit him,” Baron raved. “She would have knocked his head clean off his shoulders if she’d had any space to swing. That’s when he slapped her--hard, but she didn’t back down. When he got close to her again, she kneed him. When he looked up, she had a gun pointed at him. That’s when I got there. I wonder who I really saved, her or him.” Baron reflected mindfully. “Merle, she was pretty shaken up after it was over. I comforted her a little, but it didn’t seem to do much good.”
???????????“Thanks Baron. Sorry I thought anything less from you.” Merle apologized, though his blood was still boiling. Enraged, he stepped to the far end of the porch. He couldn’t do anything about his upset with Zara or his upset with himself, but he could do something about Barry.
???????????Concentrating intently, he let his mind touch the Bizou at the same time. Searching, searching... he visualized Barry’s features... caught hold and started pulling; sweat beading on his brow from the mental exertion. Ty and Baron watched silently. Within minutes, Barry was mysteriously standing on the porch beside them.
???????????“Man, oh man... hey man, I’m sorry about tonight... look, I’ll leave town... anything...” Barry groveled.
???????????Merle glared at him, the seething anger within him building by the second. His very expression foretold dire consequences. Barry knew his life was in jeopardy and rainbows swirling around him were the least of his worries, not even questioning how he was suddenly on a porch, in a strange neighborhood, in front of Merle. Ty knew that look and nudged Baron meaningfully. Nodding, Baron started around the far side of Barry, Ty slipped to Merle’s flank. ?
???????????Baron’s big hand darted out, grabbing Barry by the front of the shirt. “That’s a good suggestion about leaving town,” he said menacingly. “Don’t even go home for a change of clothes. Understand? Now Git!”
???????????Ty had walked Merle backward, bracing him against the house. “Let him go; it’s over. Go in and tell her you’re sorry and hold her,” he advised Merle.
???????????With an ill-tempered glare, Merle shoved his hands into his pockets and stomped down the porch steps. What the hell was he thinking, snapping at her like he did? He hadn’t even given her a chance to explain. She knew better than to be outside the back of that bar, and the mark on her face instantly had him seeing red. He needed to apologize, but he also needed to impress on her the danger she had put herself in. Her blazing eyes told him just how angry and hurt she was. The icy Nordic blue nearly swallowing her amazing hazel irises. How long before she’d cooled off? Once she did, would she talk to him? Would he have to go inside, upset her even more before he could hold her, and apologize in a way they both would enjoy.
Watching Merle’s stomping gradually slow to trudging as he reached his car, Ty suddenly remembered Mara’ tee. “Baron, Mara’ tee is in the house with Aby'gayl!” he cried, his voice trailing as he ran for the door, “and Zara!”
???????????Ty and Baron rushed through the door, stumbling over each other as they stopped just inside.
???????????All three women were standing in the kitchen talking and laughing. “What’d know about that.” Baron grinned. “I like this girl,” he said, giving Zara a wink.
???????????Ty walked over and put his arm around Aby'gayl. “What are you girls up to,” he asked.
???????????“We think we should go get a pizza,” Aby’gayl said, kissing his cheek. “Zara says there’s a pizza parlor nearby that’s open all night.”
???????????Ty noticed Zara kept looking toward the door waiting for Merle to come in. Pulling Aby’ with him as he leaned over, he whispered in her ear, “He’s out at the car.”
????Worry creasing her forehead, she headed for the door and outside to Merle. He was leaning against the side of his car, hands buried in his pockets, head down, scuffing the toe of his shoe in the dirt. She stopped just short of his reach and locked her fingers behind her back. “Want to talk about it now,” she asked.
???????????“I shouldn’t have jump to conclusions,” he said, as way of apology. “Are you okay?”
???????????She shrugged... nodded. Then as the recollection of Barry’s cool touch, her rescue, and facing Merle’s anger began to set in, she suddenly was trembling inside. “Would you hold me?” she whimpered, as the impact of the evening’s events overwhelmed her.
???????????Upset and driven by desire Merle’s arms quickly enveloped her. He stroked her head as she rested against his massive chest. He was still kissing her when the other four came outside.
???????????“Okay, break it up over there,” Ty called cheerfully. “We’re all hungry.”
???????????Merle wouldn’t let her go. Every time she started to move, he pulled her back. “I’m not hungry,” he said quietly. “Let them go; we’ll wait right here.” His antics, working their magic, helped her relax and feel safe.
???????????They tussled and hugged, then, managing to escape with the keys to his car, she giggled. “We’ll be back in a few minutes. You go cool off.”
???????????When they got back with the pizza, the three men were sitting in the living room with Grandpa. Their talk about politics and business stopped as they came in the door with piping hot pizza. After everybody had eaten, the talk began to drift back to business, and Grandpa looked at his watch.
???????????“Boys and girls, it’s getting pretty late. I need to call it a night,” Eugene announced. Ty agreed that they needed to be getting home also.
???????????“Take the car.” Merle offered Ty. “I’ll get it from you Monday at work.”
???????????They all said their good-byes, Grandpa headed for his room, and Zara started cleaning up a bit. As she rinsed the last of the dishes, Merle eased up behind her and started unbraiding her hair. As the braids came loose, and her long, silky hair fell softly around her, he kissed her shoulder. Then reaching from behind, he gently tilted her chin to look at the red mark gracing the side of her face.
???????????“It looks a little better. How’s it feeling?” he asked, caressing her cheek.
???????????“A little tender.” She winced slightly, drying her hands as she turned around to face him. “Are you still angry with me?”
???????????“I do recall telling you not to be behind the club at night,” he said mindfully. When she started to protest that intolerant brow rose. “I know Danny had to leave early, Baron filled me in earlier, but you could have moved the bike closer to the front and left through that door, right?” With her sad nod he kissed her lower lip. “Don’t let it happen again,” he said, with a stern frown, “I will not be so forgiving again.” Backing her against the counter, leaving her no room at all, she willingly submitted to his passionate kisses. “Now, where were we a little earlier?”
They had definitely missed each other this week.
Merle went with her to work Monday; mostly to be sure Barry didn’t show up. Once Ty arrived and Barry hadn’t appeared, they left her to work and went to discuss the incident with Mr. Miller. When he heard what happened and how Merle had sort of “fired” Barry, he agreed to let Mr. Peterman work with Zara until the job was finished. Ty came back to let her know what was going on and to tell her that Merle had a few things to do and would call her later.
???????????Later, when she talked to Merle, he told her he was busy and would see her the next day at work. They had been talking a few minutes when she remembered she had to go to the library the next day to do research. They agreed to meet on the library steps at six o’clock and then go to dinner.
????????????
Merle had parked his car next to Zara’s bike and was walking toward the steps as she was pushing through the double doors to meet him. As he reached the steps Janis literally came out of nowhere. Throwing her arms around Merle’s neck, she kissed him. Zara stared in disbelief; frozen midstride. Was she serious? How could he let her grab him like that? Kiss him like that in front of everyone? Maybe they weren’t as exclusive as she thought. Cutting diagonally across the broad steps she rushed blindly to the parking lot.
????????????“Zara, wait!” Merle shouted. Janis was still clutching his arm as Zara glanced back. When she reached her bike, she set her helmet on top of Merle’s car while she jammed her things inside the carry all.
???????????“Zara wait!” He called again striding across the campus with Janis dragging along.
???????????Zara refused to look back as she threw her leg over the bike. Kicking the motor over, she pushed off the curb and raced for the light. Merle grabbed the helmet off the top of his car and looked miserably in the direction she had gone. The light turned yellow, but she didn’t slow down. She was going too fast to make the turn. ?He watched helplessly as she hit the middle of the intersection, the light turning red. Turning too sharply, the bike slid sideways. She never let go. With one foot on the road, she let the bike scrape the asphalt, then jerking it upright she punched the gas. It nearly jumped out from under her. Thudding back onto the seat as the bike righted itself, she disappeared around the corner.
???????????
???????????Zara screeched into the driveway and shut off the bike. No one was home. She stomped inside and threw her things on the bed. She slammed her thirty-eight on the nightstand and changed into her running clothes. Tears streamed down her flushed cheeks she took off for the park.
???????????How could he do this to her? She should never have let her heart get involved. She had known she was lost the first night she spent in his arms. She ran, trying to race the miserable thoughts pounding through her mind. She ran from herself; she ran from him; she ran from everyone; her arms pumping at her sides she ran and ran and ran.
???????????Merle swallowed convulsively, swore bitterly, and turned his fury on Janis. He wanted some answers from her, and he wanted them right now.
By the time Merle had finished with Janis it was eight o’clock. Immediately he went to Danny’s. Danny hadn’t seen her all evening, so he drove to the house. Eugene was sitting on the porch in his rocker. When he saw Zara wasn’t with Merle, he became concerned.
???????????“Danny called here looking for Zara. She was supposed to work on one of his bikes tonight. I thought she was probably with you. What’s going on?”
???????????Merle stood there, unconsciously turning the helmet over in his hands, as he explained what had happened earlier.
???????????“I had hoped she would just come home and wait.” He sighed.
???????????“Oh, she’s been here. Her bike is in the back and her gun is in her room. I guess we’ll wait together.” Merle walked up the steps and took a seat on the swing. “Where’d she leave the helmet,” Eugene grumbled.
???????????“On top of my car,” he replied.
Every time Merle looked at the helmet, he got angrier. What was she thinking? Where was she? She nearly wrecked on that bike. Why didn’t she wait when he called after her? He knew why he was so upset but his mind didn’t want to accept it. Valerian’s question bounced around in his head – do you love her? There was no way! Sure, they connected on a level he had never experienced before. Sure, every smile she gave him brought him joy. Sure, he counted the minutes until could be with her again. But love? By the Gods what was wrong with him his thoughts cried.
Eugene could tell Merle was upset, that his mind was crowded with questions about what to do, with anger over the situation, and a fear of losing her. Finally, Eugene asked, “I know you’re familiar with tearful attention.” Merle nodded grimly that he did. Acacia and Quixotic both practiced domestic discipline; corporal punishment in the strictest sense.
???????????“Well, my Margaret and Zara are a lot alike. Feisty, strong-minded and they don’t cry easily. I learned quickly with Margaret, that if I were ever going to get her to see how serious a situation was, and that I meant what I said, I had to put her across my knee before she would really listen. I would take my hand to her bare bottom; if a harsher lesson were needed from a good solid hairbrush, I would do that too. Once she stopped fighting and gave in to the punishment I finished up within a few strokes. I would let her cry over my lap for a few minutes and if warranted she would be sent to stand in the corner. Later I would comfort her but then I would lay down the law,” Eugene said.
Merle knew that Eugene had placed Zara in the same mode of behavior. He would have to “lay down the law” to his beautiful, strong-willed woman. He didn’t want to punish her. He had taken Janis in hand and their relationship was never the same again. Was the possible outcome of losing her worth it? She’s putting herself in physical danger. Yes, she would have to face the consequences this time. He had threatened her with consequences a few times. He hadn’t followed through. This time she would find out just how painful consequences are. ?If a spanking kills their relationship, so be it. ?
???????????Several hours had passed before Zara finally came slowly up the walk. She saw Grandpa about the same time he saw her. He came to his feet glaring at her as her foot hit the first step on the porch.
???????????“Do you have any idea what time it is?” Grandpa blasted.
???????????“Kind of late,” she answered quietly.
???????????“One thirty-five in the morning,” he snapped. “Try really late! Where is your weapon? I’ll tell you where, inside on the nightstand.”
???????????“I... aaaa... didn’t plan on... mmmm... being out as long as I was,” she stuttered, “I lost track of time.”
???????????“You lost track of time. And where have you been while you’ve been losing track of time?”
???????????“I went for a run, I had a lot on my mind,” she said, looking straight at Merle.
???????????“Don’t be looking at him. You’re talking with me right now; he will deal with you in a minute.” Grandpa ordered. “Where have you been?”
???????????“The Park,” she muttered, through clenched teeth.
???????????“The Park! I’ve already made my feelings clear to you on the subject of being in the park at night, haven’t I?”
???????????“Yes sir. And, I said I lost track of time!” she repeated sharply.
???????????Eugene scowled at her. He looked over at Merle, then back at her. “Young lady, you had better be thankful he’s here. Otherwise, this discussion would be between me and your bare bottom,” he declared harshly.
???????????“Yes sir.” She winced, embarrassed at being reprimanded in front of Merle.
After glaring at her another full minute, he tapped his cheek, “Step up here, and give me a kiss good night.”
???????????“I’m sorry I worried you Grandpa,” she whispered, kissing his cheek.
???????????“You and I will finish this in the morning,” he growled, and with that, he went into the house.
???????????Merle moved to the front of the porch and perched himself against the rail of the banister. Turning to face him she could see he was angry. His jaws clenched, as his eyes angrily fixed on hers. He remained there glaring at her. She stood waiting, silenced by his dark, forbidding expression. Tears started to burn her eyes. He was unmoved. He had an uncanny sense with her tears - get her way tears, poor me tears, heartbroken tears; these were poor me tears. Seconds ticked by as her eyes became brimming pools of anguish.
???????????“Come with me!!” he blurted out angrily. Startled she blinked, splashing tears past her dark lashes. “Now” he demanded sharply, snatching hold of her elbow.
???????????She stumbled down the stairs behind him as the first sob escaped her lips, trembling and sobbing as he strode across the yard. At the garage he flung the door open and ushered her in. He didn’t give her a chance to protest as he sat down on the work bench, yanked her running shorts and panties down to her knees then, grasping her wrist he tumbled her over his knee.
???????????“No, no, no,” she shrieked, when the first spank landed in the center of her bare bottom catching both cheeks. Startled and before she could release another outraged shriek, a flurry of smacks followed, her hands darting back to protect her bottom.?
???????????“Oww… Oww…” she yelped, trying to wiggle away. “Stop please… Merle stop!”
?Snatching her hands up into the middle of her back he tightened his grip around her waist and continued the assault. “I’ve warned you about consequences, haven’t I,” he barked, as the severity of the spanks increased. “I called for you to wait, did you?”
“No,” she wailed, arching when his palm repeatedly smacked the tender skin of her thighs.
“Do you know how close you came to getting seriously hurt today – Do you,” he snapped, striking the same place twice emphasizing his question.??
“Yes sir. Yes sir! No more! Please no more!” When her painful yelps became remorseful cries, he delivered the last few searing smacks resting the palm of his hand on her burning bottom. ?
Pinning her in place for several minutes, he let the scorching heat of her bottom and her humiliating, childish position settle in her mind. She couldn’t remember a spanking hurting so much. Her daddy had always spanked same as grandpa, but not like this. Merle scolded while he spanked, punctuating his words with his broad hand. The scolding seared each swat into her mind, each scorching question demanding a truthful answer. She was devastated.
“Shhh... it’s alright,” he soothed, “calm down.” Soon she began to calm, and he turned her to sit on his lap, satisfied with her wince when her tender bottom rubbed against with his jeans. Held safely in his arms, she didn’t want him to let go, ever. Once she had regained some control, he tugged up her and then eased her back, releasing her from his embrace.
????????????“We need to have a discussion while I’m still angry with you,” he said sternly. “Why didn’t you wait when I called after you? I know you heard me.”
???????????Shrugging, hurt tears started welling up in her eyes again. He paused for a punishing long minute.
???????????“Give me your keys,” he ordered, grabbing her running shorts, and handing them to her.
???????????“Why,” she sniffed, reaching into the pocket for the keys. Abruptly presenting his open palm, she handed him her key ring.
???????????While she struggled into her running shorts, he was hefting the keys in his hand as he examined them. He stopped at the motorcycle key and removed it from the ring. Slowly raking his teeth over his lower lip, his eyes narrowed as he gazed at her.
???????????“You know you lost control of the bike. You had no helmet on, and you ran the light. Red! I don’t know what you were thinking, but I’ll tell you what I think.” He counseled, returning the rest of the keys, “I think you need to stay off the bike for a while.”
???????????“But I have to get to work, I have classes...” she yelped in protest.
???????????“Next time you’ll think before you go jumping on that thing and racing off,” he remarked harshly. He dropped the key into his shirt pocket. “One week!”
???????????“That’s not fair!” she hissed, fighting to get off his lap; he had no right.
???????????Merle’s temper instantly flared. “You want to try for two,” he snapped sharply.
???????????“One,” she inhaled in a whisper, backing off immediately. The last person to treat her this way was the boys’ father. ?Richard had spanked her on more than one occasion, that’s why she loved him so much and why every other man always seemed so inadequate.??
???????????Giving her only moments to cope with his harshness, Merle continued, “We need to discuss this business about being in the park after dark.”
???????????“The Park! Grandpa already got on my case about the park,” she protested.
???????????“That’s right, and I’m going to get on your case too. I agree with your grandfather. You have no business in the park at night. I also, as you can attest, agree with his method of punishment. If I find out it happens again,” he informed, lifting her head with a finger under her chin. “I will take a hairbrush to your bare bottom. Is that clear?”
???????????Merle was again unmoved by the tears welling up in her eyes. He waited, letting his words sink in as she remained defenseless before him. It had been a long time since someone took control of her, someone who cared enough to address her careless actions. Her grandparents, parents, and late husband all believed in corporal punishment… ?
???????????“No more night walks alone,” he said sternly, bringing her back to the present. “Understood?”
???????????Her sad nod started, hot tears trickling down her cheek once more. Miserably, she waited for his anger to subside.
???????????“Come here baby,” he sighed, his strong arms enveloping her as he came to his feet. “It’s okay,” he soothed. She buried her face in his shoulder, sobbing. She was unaccustomed to crying and was confused at the emotions suddenly surfacing after all these years. Had she found a man who cared enough, someone like her late husband who she had loved beyond comprehension? Richard had always taken his role as head of household seriously. The spanking she had just received spoke volumes about how Merle was going to react to her recklessness and temper.
????????????Gently easing her away, he gazed into her teary hazel eyes. The answer to Valerian’s question encompassed his thoughts. He knew. His mind finally accepted what his heart had been telling him.??
“Zara, I love you,” he whispered. ?
???????????Hearing his words made her realize what was happening to her emotionally. “I love you,” she breathed, and their lips met sealing a vow of commitment.?
???????????Slipping his warm hand in hers, he quietly led her back to the house and into the bedroom. As he pushed the bedroom door closed, he pulled her into his embrace, his lips melding to hers in unmistakable possession. Grabbing the hem of her shirt, he pulled it over her head, breaking the kiss only long enough to free her of the garment; his shirt floating to the floor next. Chest to breast, he groaned in pleasure. His fingers brushed hers as they each reached for the other’s lower clothes. Laughing, she backed up two steps to work on removing her running shorts as he worked on his jeans. In moments he walked his naked, curvy prize backward until her knees bumped the bed. Grasping her narrow waist, he tossed her on the mattress and climbed between her legs.
???????????“You’re mine,” he breathed, as he pinned her beneath him. He kissed her lips, her nose, and each eyelid, quietly repeating his chant, before he began a slow journey from her collarbone to her belly button heading south to his goal. ?
???????????He wedged his broad shoulders between her quivering thighs as his tongue and lips continued their sinuous journey. His hazel eyes smoldered when he lifted his gaze so he could see her reaction.?He swiped his tongue over her clit. With a cry her hips bucked off the bed. Wrapping his arms over her thighs to hold her down, he used his fingers to spread her dripping folds to his talented tongue. ?
???????????He knew she was close. Her breath was coming in short gasps, her knuckles white as they gripped the quilt beneath her. With one slow methodical swipe of his tongue, from her winking bottom hole to the sweet nectar of her core, he moved over her, aligning his aching cock and thrusting into her warmth.
That night, in exquisite harmony, they made love to each other. Finally sated, Merle tucked her bottom, still warm from her spanking, into his groin, spooning them together and they slept.
???????????The next morning grandpa was up and fixing everyone bacon and eggs for breakfast when they walked in.
????????????“You two straighten things out last night?” he asked gruffly.
???????????“Yes,” she breathed.
???????????“Then I guess we have nothing to discuss,” he said, turning to look at her. “But next time you put yourself in danger, you will feel my displeasure as well as his. Understood?”
???????????“Yes sir,” she quietly answered.
Merle munched a piece of bacon as he listened to Zara give Eugene one-and-two-word answers. Pretty much the same as she had given him since they got up. He had caressed and kissed her awake this morning and they had thoroughly indulged themselves, but once they were out of the bed and getting dressed, she had gradually become sullener.?
Surely if she were going to have second thoughts about their relationship, she would have had it last night. He continued to watch as Eugene filled three plates with bacon, scrambled eggs, and toast and carried them to the table. He sat a carafe of coffee between them, and they all took their seats. Merle watched her out of the corner of his eye while he and Eugene talked. She seemed to be pushing her food around on her plate, but he was quite sure she hadn’t taken the first bite.
???????????“You better hurry up girl,” Eugene urged, noticing her full plate also. “You’re going to be late for class.”
???????????“I’m not going to class,” she sighed heavily, without looking up. “I think I’ll hang out around here today.”
???????????Merle knew immediately what the problem was. “Will you excuse us a minute, Eugene,” he asked, standing as he spoke. Stepping to her chair, he scooted it back, taking her elbow at the same time. “We need to talk,” he said, leading her out the door before she could protest.
???????????Closing the bedroom door, Merle leaned his back against it, contemplating his next words. As he thought, he remembered something his father, Fallon, had told him once, especially concerning women, ‘Be consistent, but at the same time considerate; do what you say you’re going to do. Women, at times are hard to figure out; emotional, moody, unpredictable. Nevertheless, be consistent or they will lose their trust in you. Don’t make your demands or rules so unreasonable they can’t comply or resent them.’ ?
???????????Taking a deep breath, he pushed away from the door, closing the distance between them. Sliding his hand around the back of her head, he pulled her into a searing kiss. She struggled a minute, but the instant she relented, he broke the kiss.
???????????“I am not giving you the bike keys and you are going to attend classes all week,” he declared, holding up a finger to stop her protest.?
He watched the emotions play across her face ranging from outraged to resigned in a matter of moment. “I will arrange my schedule around you, this week.”
His brow rose, daring her to bulk. When she didn’t, he continued, “I know you don’t like it and are embarrassed, but you brought this on yourself. Your little stunt on that motorcycle last night will not happen again, ever.” He watched as her eyes began to swim in heartbroken tears. Softening a little, he leaned in and kissed her again. “I love you,” he breathed against her lips. “I am not going to lose you now that I have you.”
The nearly imperceptible nod sent a lone tear streaking down her cheek, and he caught it with his thumb. ?“You’re mine,” he said softly, kissing her one last time before directing her back to the kitchen table.
???????????While Merle drove her to class, she jotted down her schedule for him so he could work his schedule around her. Pulling into the college parking lot, she tucked her notes in his shirt pocket when he leaned in to kiss her. The week was better than she expected, but very taxing on Merle, although she didn’t think he would be restricting her mode of transportation again anytime soon. She also wouldn’t be giving him a reason to either.
