Many chronic pain sufferers also have a history of trauma or otherwise emotionally charged experiences. These factors are often mistaken as unrelated, or irrelevant to the chronic pain experience.
In my understanding of addressing chronic pain, accepting and understanding our personal trauma or emotional triggers is an important step toward reclaiming our lives. Even when these factors seem unrelated, learning more about ourselves and how we respond to them is a key component to regaining a sense of control over our emotions, and empowering ourselves to become responsive-rather than reactive in triggering situations.
When chronic pain sufferers begin to regain a sense of control over their emotions, it is also possible to feel more in control of the pain- rather than feeling steered or restricted by the pain.
On of the best ways to begin facing our traumatic histories and triggering emotions is through meditation. Daily meditation has been a key factor in my recovery from chronic pain, as a result of learning how to address and process my emotions- rather than avoiding difficult emotions and ultimately being influenced by them anyway.
