Chromosome Banding Techniques

Types of chromosomal banding techniques:

• GC and AT rich regions
• Constitutive heterochromatin regions

Chromosomal bands can be detected after treatment of chromosomes with restriction enzymes so also called as RE Bands.

Banding Techniques:

1. G – Banding (Giemsa Banding):

2. R - Banding:

It is absent in plant chromosomes

3. C-Banding:

4. N – Banding:

5. T - Banding:

• T bands are smaller than R bands
• It is observed strictly at telomeric site.

6. Q - Banding:

• It is especially useful for distinguishing human Y chromosomes
