As I look at my Outlook Calendar in December as I’m sure many of you do, you are probably stuck with two question at this time of year, what did I achieve this year and am I ready for Christmas?
To provide some support on the latter question of Christmas readiness, if you see any merit in the Christmas stories of The Christmas Carol and The Grinch, you are only ready for Christmas when your heart is open to it, let that be your first task and everything else will follow.
It has been a busy year and I am both amazed and grateful for what we have been able to achieve as a small focus team in six months.
When I first met my manager at the interview for Sensis Whitepages I could not have imagined where I would be in the next six months in terms of achievement.
My manager was quick to tell me that we would be doing something brand new in the business which had not been done before.
He asked if I would be ok with doing something completely new that was a little different.
I said yes offering new technology to the market is a very worthy cause where you can make a real difference to many.
Needless to say, he was convinced by my enthusiasm, I couldn’t wait to get started on figuring out how to take Whitepages Connect to market.
A location marketing platform is a new concept in the Australian market, before starting at Whitepages the closest thing I could relate it to on first impression was Trustpilot or Hoot-suite, and I quickly found both of these platforms only have a fraction of the capability of the Connect platform.
In fact many marketing professionals have been drawn towards utlising the Connect Platform because of the functionality gap that exists in Trustpilot and Hootsuite.
Whitepages Connect does well at managing three business elements
- Local SEO management & analytics
- Review management
- Social Media posting and management
I had worked in similar scenarios before, but not quite a set up like this where I would experience a much higher level of autonomy in my work in presenting a brand new product.
One of the most exciting projects this year was going live with our own Enterprise website.
With our focus being solutions only for Enterprises it was fantastic to be able to articulate and present our offering on a website.
When I worked at Career One we sold a completely new product for job advertising and recruitment but our management had a very strict path for presenting it to customers, so it felt quite empowering to be given a greater level of autonomy in this new job.
The next vital step was getting to know my new team and meeting people around the office at Sensis.
The most valuable part of orientation is social orientation where you build bridges with the people that you will be working with and knowing where to go for different support functions such as HR & Finance.
I found the work culture here is very people focused and there is this great awareness that as a brand that supports businesses across Australia, kindness and generosity are the best qualities you can practice if you are to continue to be a leader and influence in the marketplace.
It has been a fantastic year where as a small team we have met many Enterprises across Australia in Retail, Finance, Real Estate, Auto, Home maintenance, Government and much more.
However we could not have made the progress we did without supportive leadership and staff ready to help our team.
In the middle of my busy work schedule I was also offered the opportunity to do paid volunteering with our partnership charity RUOK.
It was quite the honour to volunteer with RUOK in September this year and meet with locals in Bendigo.
Some of the people I met were hard working professionals, some local business owners and some were just grateful locals that were happy to see people passionate about mental health.
I was greatly enriched by the experience and I was humbled to witness the talent and people skills exhibited by the RUOK team, they truly are an inspiration.
I will look forward to volunteering again next year and helping make a difference with the RUOK team.
In terms of working in a small team dedicated to creating Enterprise solutions we have developed quickly and have shown courage in some of the calculated risks we have taken. Furthermore I am also proud that we have always done due diligence research first before executing a strategy.
In fact we had periods of time at work where we have solely focused on research to better understand and address the business needs that exist as a top priority in each industry that we focused on.
Christmas this year will certainly feel like a great reward for a job well done.
However I very much look forward to January 2020 and connecting with more Enterprises about the difference Whitepages Connect can make to their business online.
