A Christmas Gift Beyond the Present
EPISODE 1
It was a bright December afternoon in Lagos. The festive spirit was in the air as colorful decorations adorned the streets, and children ran about, excited for Christmas and the New Year. Ade and Segun, two close friends, sat on the porch of Ade’s home, sipping chilled zobo and chatting about their holiday plans.
“Ade,” Segun began, looking up at the sky, “what did your parents buy you for Christmas this year?”
Ade’s face lit up as he grinned widely. “Ah, my parents went all out this time! They got me new sneakers, a designer jacket, and a PS5. What about you? What’s your Christmas package looking like?”
Segun chuckled softly and leaned back against the wall. “Hmm… they haven’t bought me any new clothes or fancy gadgets this year,” he said, a trace of amusement in his voice.
“Ah-ah, Segun!” Ade exclaimed in mock surprise. “What kind of Christmas is that? Your parents no do am well o.”
Segun shook his head, his tone turning thoughtful. “No, Ade. They’ve actually done something much bigger for me this year. They recently purchased an educational target plan for me.”
Ade squinted, puzzled. “Educational target plan? What’s that?”
Segun smiled, sensing Ade’s curiosity. “It’s a plan that ensures my future is financially secure, no matter what happens. My parents explained it to me. This plan is specifically designed to pay for my education—even if one day they aren’t around or if they face health or financial challenges. It’s like a safety net for my future.”
Ade’s face showed a mix of interest and skepticism. “Okay, but how does that help with now? I mean, we’re talking about Christmas gifts.”
“It’s not about now, Ade,” Segun explained patiently. “It’s about the future. With this plan, I’ll have the funds to attend any university—even abroad in places like the US, UK, or Canada. It’ll help me build a successful career, and with that, I’ll be able to buy all the clothes, cars, and houses I want. But not just that—this plan is like a promise. A promise that no matter what happens, I’ll have the resources to achieve my dreams.”

Ade nodded slowly, clearly impressed. “So, even if something unexpected happens, like… your parents not being able to support you anymore, this plan will still take care of you?”
“Exactly!” Segun said, his voice full of confidence. “It’s not just about the money for school; it also covers things like critical illness or other emergencies. It’s their way of making sure I don’t just rely on luck or chance for my future. They said it’s the best Christmas gift they could ever give me because it’s not just for today—it’s for tomorrow and beyond.”
Ade leaned back, a newfound respect for Segun and his parents’ foresight washing over him. “Wow, Segun. That’s deep. Now I’m thinking… those sneakers and PS5 might not be as important as I thought. Your parents are really smart. They’re investing in your future.”
Segun shrugged modestly. “It’s not flashy like sneakers, but it’s worth much more. And one day, when I’ve achieved all they dreamed for me, I’ll be able to give them something even greater in return.”
As the sun began to set, the two friends sat in silence for a moment, each reflecting on the meaning of true gifts and the power of planning for the future.
