The final weeks of the year are a balancing act: Spending time with family and friends, reflecting on the past 12 months, wrapping up work before the start of the next calendar year, and so on.
If your work plans involve shipping over-dimensional (OD) freight, you may find it harder to do so from the end of December through the beginning of January.?
In addition to shorter daylight hours, many states have increased restrictions on the hours permitted freight is allowed to travel over the winter holidays.?
Drivers are also likely to be taking extended home time, so coverage will be harder to come by.

Use the list below as a reference for your holiday shipping needs. While this list is a useful tool, the most accurate source for OSOW freight holiday restrictions will always be each state’s Department of Transportation (DOT).?

Below you'll find a list of the holiday closures for state permit offices and any additional holiday travel restrictions for OSOW freight.?
Alabama: Office is closed on 12/25. No OSOW permitted travel is allowed from sunset on Tues., Dec. 24 until sunrise Thurs., Dec. 26. View Alabama’s holiday restrictions calendar.
Alaska: Office is closed on 12/25. No OSOW holiday travel restrictions. Visit Alaska’s Motor Vehicle Customer Service Center.
Arizona: Office is closed on 12/25. No OSOW permitted travel is allowed starting at noon on Tues., Dec. 24 until 30 minutes prior to sunrise on Thurs., Dec. 26. Read Arizona’s OSOW holiday legal guidelines.?
Arkansas: Office is closed from 12/24-12/25. No OSOW freight can move on Wed., Dec. 25. Check out Arkansas’ permit rules.?
California: Office is closed on 12/25. Permitted freight traveling on a state holiday that must be accompanied by a pilot car is prohibited to travel from 4 p.m. to midnight on Tues., Dec. 24 and from noon to midnight on Wed., Dec. 25. Connecticut: Office is closed on 12/25. No OSOW travel allowed beginning at noon Tues., Dec. 24 until daylight on Thurs., Dec. 26. Visit Connecticut’s OSOW permitting website.

West Virginia: Office is closed on 12/25. No OSOW travel is allowed starting at sunset on Tues., Dec. 24 until sunrise on Thurs., Dec. 26. Check out West Virginia’s holiday travel restrictions.
Wisconsin: Office is closed from 12/24-12/25. For freight exceeding 13 feet, 6 inches tall, 150 feet long, and/or 12 feet wide, no travel is permitted starting at noon on Mon., Dec. 23 through sunrise on Thurs., Dec. 26. Unless indicated otherwise in the permit, there are no restrictions statewide for freight not exceeding the stated dimensions for all counties except Columbia, Dane, Milwaukee, Rock, and Waukesha counties. Wyoming: Office is closed on 12/25. Any OSOW load requiring escorts is prohibited from traveling starting 30 minutes after sunset on Tues., Dec. 24 until 30 minutes before sunrise on Thurs., Dec. 26. Visit Wyoming’s permit resources webpage.
