Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams
In the summer of 2019, during my sophomore year, I took my first ever fashion class. Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Fashion in Europe examined how fashion design and costume design intersect, and how we can understand the economic and cultural realities of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries through the shifting trends of fashion. For my final project, I chose to explore the impact Maria Grazia Chiuri's work has had on the fashion houses she has helmed.
This past Veterans Day Weekend, I got the opportunity to visit the Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in New York City. It was surreal to see the creations I described in the presentation firsthand. As part of?Dior's transformation as a feminist brand, we can also consider the models which Maria chooses to represent her brand. Modern feminists call for the complete representation of all women, including those of different races. This has been reflected on the runway as well as in campaigns.
