Christian Corporate Leader as Stewards in the Marketplace

Christian Corporate Leader as Stewards in the Marketplace

"When God equips us through His Holy Spirit, He is not giving us a mere tool to accomplish the task, He gives us Himself."

Hi Meaningful Leaders,

There's a profound parallel that aligns the corporate world with spiritual truths deeply rooted in Christianity. The word "corporation," branches out from the Latin root "corpus," meaning body, invites us to envision a corporation not merely as a legal entity created to conduct business but as a living, breathing body of people. This concept is not far removed from the biblical depiction of the Church as Christ’s body, with Him as the Head. In this divine arrangement, there’s a powerful lesson for Christian corporate leaders: the call to lead under the guidance and authority of God, making our corporations a testament to His wisdom and grace in the marketplace.

A Divine Blueprint for Leadership

The biblical narrative offers a blueprint for leadership that transcends time and culture. Consider Moses, a figure who was tasked by God to lead His people out of Egypt. Moses, feeling inadequate, was assured by God of His divine assistance. It was through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit that Moses was able to fulfill this monumental task. This pattern of divine appointment and empowerment is a recurring theme throughout Scripture. Leaders are called, equipped by the Holy Spirit, and their successful fulfillment of God's assignments serves as proof of the Spirit's presence and power.

This biblical framework provides an illuminating perspective for Christian leaders in the corporate world. Just as Moses was appointed and equipped by God, corporate leaders are called to view their positions as God-given assignments for which is willing to properly equip us. The marketplace, with its challenges and opportunities, becomes our platform, where we are to exercise stewardship and leadership under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to bring honor to our Father.

Submitting to Divine Leadership

The concept of leadership in the corporate world often emphasizes autonomy and authority. However, the biblical model presents a different approach: submission to God as the ultimate leader. For Christian corporate leaders, this means acknowledging that while we may hold positions of power, we are ultimately under the authority of Jesus Christ, as the Head. Our leadership should therefore reflect Christ’s attributes: servant-hearted, integrity-driven, and committed to the welfare of others.

Submitting to God in all endeavors requires a constant seeking of His will, a readiness to listen to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and a commitment to lead in a way that aligns with biblical principles. It's not merely knowing God, it requires an intimate love relationship with our Creator in which we are in constant communication with Him. This submission is not a sign of weakness but a source of strength. It acknowledges that true success in leadership comes not from human effort alone but from operating within the will and empowerment of God.

Creating a Space for the Spirit

Just as the tabernacle was constructed according to God's specifications to house His presence, Christian corporate leaders are called to create environments in our corporations where the Spirit of God can dwell and guide. This means fostering a corporate culture that values integrity, excellence, and respect for individuals—a culture where the fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) are evident and celebrated.

By doing so, we not only cultivate a positive and productive workplace but also open the door for the Holy Spirit to work in and through our teams and leaders, guiding decisions, inspiring innovation, and empowering the collective body to achieve its mission in a manner that honors God.

The Proof of Presence and Power

The ultimate measure of a leader’s success in the biblical framework is not merely the achievement of goals or the accumulation of wealth but the evidence of the Holy Spirit's presence and power. This is seen in the effective completion of assignments, the transformation of lives, and the positive impact on society. The proof is in a leadership that transcends the ordinary, marked by a divine enabling to accomplish what seems impossible by human standards.

To illustrate this concept, allow me to share an excerpt from the Bible study Experiencing God: After the exile from Egypt, "Moses had a task as an administrator, so God equipped him, by His Holy Spirit to administer. When members of a church begin considering spiritual gifts, they sometimes run into difficulty by thinking God gives them a thing, like an ingredient called administration. He doesn't give a thing; He gives Himself. The gift is a Person. The Holy Spirit equips you with His administrative ability so His administration becomes your administration. When you see a spiritual gift exercised, you are observing a manifestation of the Holy Spirit - the Holy Spirit equipping and enabling an individual with His abilities to accomplish God's work."

Leading God’s Way: Fulfilling and Successful

Leading with divine guidance is the most fulfilling and successful way to lead. It aligns the leader’s purpose with Kingdom purposes, ensures the right foundation for decision-making, and empowers leaders with divine strength and wisdom. In a world where leadership often falls short, the biblical model stands out as a beacon of hope and effectiveness.

For Christian corporate leaders, the challenge is clear: to lead not by might, nor by power, but by the Spirit of the Lord (Zechariah 4:6). In doing so, we not only achieve success in the marketplace but also contribute to the greater work of God’s Kingdom on earth, leading in a way that brings glory to Him and fulfills the deepest purposes of our own lives and the lives of those we lead.

Let us, therefore, embrace this divine calling with both humility and boldness, leading our corporations as vibrant expressions of Christ’s body in the marketplace, guided by His Spirit, for His glory and our ultimate good.
