Choosing a technology vendor in the fields of machine learning, analytics or automation

Vendor selection is easy and fast when looking for a customized or a niche innovation technology as only a few actors are in the market

It becomes more difficult if you are looking for a standard, off the shelf technology, like machine learning, RPA, chatbots, or OCR, because the number of vendors and options on the market are numerous. As a result, businesses will often spend a lot of time and energy to find the "best vendor"

My view on this: don’t spend too much time on vendor selection

It is more important to kick off your journey as soon as possible. Start generating benefits asap. And if possible before competition...

Vendor selection is not a strategic project activity for three reasons:

1 - For off the shelf, standard technologies, the differences between these vendors are typically not strong. Pick one of the Top 5 vendors on the market that fits your budget, is responsive and close to you

2 - Integration between technologies is not an issue anymore, you won't be bound by your choice

3 - All companies which have scaled their projects have ended up diversifying their pool of vendors to combine the best of each solutions present in the market

The point is not to lose sight of understanding the vendor landscape, but the priority should be to kick start the journey as soon as possible and generate benefits
