Choosing Who You Do Business With

This week we have been talking about Caroline and her PIA (Pain in the A**) customer Susan and how Caroline finally had enough and fired Susan – even though Susan was her #1 client.

Many business owners would recoil at Caroline’s action.

No way they could just fire their top customer.

Remember, "the customer is always right," so even if they're difficult, just suck it up and deal with it.

Right??

Wrong…

Especially when the PIA customer monopolises your time and drains away your ability to explore even better opportunities.

Susan and Caroline are fictional characters, but their story is based on several true experiences.

For example, Renee owned an ad agency whose top client was monopolising her time and making her life miserable while always demanding fee cuts and special extra efforts.

The first thing we did was to help Renee diversify away from this toxic company, so she wasn’t reliant upon them.

The second thing I did was to help Renee analyse what she was missing out on due to all the time invested in this client.

Renee quickly realised that due to the demands of this difficult customer, she was turning away the business she needed

Finally we put a plan in place for the next 8 weeks where Renee focused on setting better boundaries while exploring the other opportunities so she could diversify more away from the difficult client.

And it worked.

Renee felt comfortable enough to fire the client.

She had a dip in revenues for about a month while the new clients came up to speed.

But by the end of the year she was enjoying record sales and adding more customers who she felt were a much better fit for the business.

Which allows her to now focus on growing other aspects of her business.
