Choosing the Smoother Road in Construction Project Management?

Major infrastructure projects aren’t known for being fast or effortless. From planning and funding to the collaboration of multiple entities that must work in lock step, these programs are complex!??

An insufficient – or even nonexistent – construction project management information system (PMIS) can shoulder much of the blame. A Dodge Data Smart Report reveals that 56% of government projects experienced cost increases and 48% had schedule delays due to poor data quality, which is exacerbated by a lackluster PMIS.?

To explore this, Kahua and Government Technology hosted the Jan. 18, 2024, webinar, “Smoother Roads Ahead: PMIS Insights on Transportation ,” with top construction industry experts Sue Frost , Managing Director, Infrastructure & Capital Projects, 德勤 ; Cari Stieglitz , Co-Founder of Kaivolve; Kahua Chief Evangelist Nicholas Johnson ; and Randell Iwasaki , former director of California Department of Transportation and CEO of Iwasaki Consulting Services.?

The discussion revolved around improving the impact, financing, procurement, delivery and operations of infrastructure assets.??

Watch the webinar now to discover how you can smooth out the frequently rocky roads in infrastructure construction.?

Key Challenges in Transportation Projects : The growing complexity of projects – influenced by urbanization, multiple ownership properties, utility rights-of-way and government jurisdictions – poses significant hurdles. The incorporation of new technology has brought about a data-driven environment. But not all data is created equal! Big projects generate mountains of data, and the right PMIS can help owners find and utilize the data that will assist in building, opening and operating infrastructure assets.?

Data Management : The sensitive nature of data related to national security makes safeguarding information a top priority. Owners grapple with preventing data breaches and ensuring financial accountability, especially with stringent requirements for reporting on the use of funds from various sources.?

Financial Accountability and Transparency : Given the strict requirements associated with federal, state, local and private funding, financial accountability is a critical concern for these government projects. The transparency demanded in this era – especially with the substantial funding from?the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act – has intensified the need for a robust PMIS solution.?

Asset Centric Project Management : The concept of asset centric project management highlights the importance of utilizing data throughout the project lifecycle. The challenge lies in transforming data into valuable information that can be leveraged for efficient project planning, design, procurement, construction and operation.?

Visualization and Data Integration : By combining data sources – such as GIS overlays with population growth or crash data – transportation agencies can gain valuable insights. The ability to centralize and own project data enhances decision making throughout the asset's lifecycle.??

Recruiting and Retaining Talent : The final topic of the webinar but certainly not the least important was the impact of modern tools on recruiting and retaining talent. The adoption of innovative technologies such as a flexible and scalable PMIS makes the field more attractive to the younger generation. This helps foster excitement and interest in fields like engineering and construction management.?

Real-life examples were shared by the transportation experts, including how Kahua can help track embedded carbon, manage funding sources and monitor small business/diversity participation. And Kahua’s adaptable platform allows for quick adjustments to changing project requirements.?
