As people age, they experience physical changes, which is a normal part of the journey. But the world around them including their own homes is not designed with them in mind and that is the problem. This makes older adults feel less comfortable and more excluded and isolated from their environment.??

The key here is to think of the functions that start to work in a different way, consequently, the world needs to respond by finding solutions that help seniors to continue living in an independent manner.??

One of the earliest functions that experience change is the visual function and how they perceive colors around them. Older adults see colors differently from younger people as their color perception diminishes.

  • When designing and choosing the color scheme for seniors’ homes; it is preferred to use warmer colors as they can distinguish them better.??
  • It is preferred to use bright color schemes such as yellow and gold because it helps make the atmosphere more cheerful, affecting their whole mood and mental state.??
  • Another thing is using contrasting colors, which help them distinguish the surfaces from each other. So, for example, using red or brown with white creates high contrast and helps distinguish between the different surfaces and their functions.??
  • This could be done by a combination of wall paintings, furniture, and the accessories such as pillows, cushions, and carpets.??
