Choosing a Power of Attorney
Let's face it - the future is uncertain. That's why it's so important to plan ahead and have measures in place so your finances are taken care of if you are unable to manage them. A power of attorney is specifically designed to before your legal representative and has the authority to manage bills, investments, bank accounts, and even sell property such as your home.
As Pantagraph explains, choosing a power of attorney is a major decision. You should never be pressured into a specific person, as they may be trying to abuse the system. Trust, competence, and accountability are the most important qualities to look for when trying to pick a power of attorney.
You should also be very specific to exactly what the "agent" has authority over. You may wish to limit certain actions or be all-inclusive. It's entirely up to you, the "principal." Keep in mind that a POA for is legally binding and they can as your representative. As always, it's important to consult a legal professional when you want to create a POA.
