Choosing To Have a Better Day

?? When you wake up in the morning and you step outside, do you take a deep breath, and think "My oh my! I'm choosing right now to feel good today!" ??

~ to the tune of "What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes


It's that easy. Having a better day I mean. The practice of having a better day. It's simple. Let me break it down for you.


In those first few seconds of waking up, watch your first thoughts. If they are anything like "Ugh another day of work that I hate. I have to drive in rush hour traffic. I really DON'T want to even be up!" Ooooh boy are you in for a rocky day!


Why not try a different approach? Wake up and choose to think, "I am so blessed!" and then list out 5-10 reasons why you're blessed. I can think of 10 that fit more people than not.


1. You woke up.

2. Which means you slept.

3. Which means you're alive.

4. This means you have another chance to do the things that light you up and puts a fire under your tail end. ??

5. There is clean water on the planet.

6. The sun came up again, even if it's hidden behind clouds.

7. #5 and #6 mean that trees and plants can grow.

8. This means you have air to breathe.

9. And the opportunity for life-sustaining food.

10. You have access to technology. (You're reading this on LinkedIn.)


There are ALWAYS things to appreciate. Even on the worst day of our lives many of this list of 10 is also true for each of us. I'm not saying to be so positive that you're toxic. Just that if we take a moment in the first few minutes of being awake to appreciate some things that we have instead of complaining about what our day holds, we'll be better equipped to handle whatever life throws at us today.


Tomorrow morning when you wake up, be better equipped. You'll be in a better mood which is great for you, first and foremost, AND it benefits the people you're around too. Start your day off on a better note for yourself. Because you want to feel better! It will take some time of practice to be able to carry that better mood further and further into the day. You're building a muscle and that takes time. Start tomorrow. Don't delay. This one choice can change the trajectory of your life. Adjusting just a few centimeters will change your direction in the long run.


If no one else tells you this today, know that I am so proud of you! You're doing AWESOME!

This is simple. Not always easy. I often wake up thinking of responsibilities and commitments that I must honor. The idea that one can be grateful for the blessing of being responsible....yeah, not always easy to do. Still, a good read.
