Choosing the Best Occupational Therapy Interventions

?

Have you ever wondered if you are doing the right things with your client? Are you planning the right interventions? Are you focusing on the right goals? Are you delivering the best occupational therapy?

?

Whether you are a new grad or are a decade into your career, these questions are normal. These questions also demonstrate that you are constantly assessing, modifying, and seeking new creative ways to make a difference for your clients.

?

One of the best ways to overcome doubt is to engage in continuing education, which can both reaffirm your own practice and inspire new ideas or teach new techniques.

?

The scope of occupational therapy is vast. We can use this to our advantage when planning a course of action for our clients. We do this by building a strong occupational profile that paints a picture of who our clients are and what is meaningful to them. If we know what is salient and purposeful to an individual client, we can create interventions that will make lasting changes in the brain by releasing dopamine, increasing attention and motivation, prompting the individual to predict outcomes, and improving performance over time.

?

Key questions to ask as you are interviewing a client are

·????? Who are the key people in your life?

·????? What does a typical day look like for you?

·????? What in your day is harder than it should be?

·????? How do you like to spend your spare time?

·????? What do you want to get out of coming to occupational therapy?
