"Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It's about making life fairer for women everywhere. It's not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It's about baking a new pie."
A quote from Gloria Steinem, who I was googling frantically last night after watching her bio The Glorias.
After a weekend still on a high from our first week of Sage Foundation empowering women, it felt right to carry on educating myself about the women who have stood before me campaigning for change.
Thursday saw our first Speaker Series in the UKI with our partner Radical Recruit. Emma and Alisha spoke powerfully about the work they do, the women they support and what we, employers and the corporate community can do to help drive change.
The takeaway message was, check your privilege. That real equality and inclusiveness comes from us having to change our behaviours and work practices, not only for women but for all those excluded from the ‘norms’ of society.
Looking ahead to this week and further into the month of March we have many amazing opportunities to educate ourselves and understand where we can make a difference.
Today we are supporting Salute her, by giving a ‘social media salute’ . Highlighting women veterans who are often hidden and resistant to ask for support when leaving the armed forces. That many experience discrimination and sexual abuse, but do not ask for help.
We are also launching our mentoring programme with Girls Network. Girls are often limited by their background, parental income and network and they want to challenge and change that. How do you learn about different career pathways if your family have never work? How to you know that you have the opportunity to be anything if English is your second language and you are not getting the support you need to succeed? We are actively looking for mentors to join the programme and support the next generation of women to be all they can be.
March gives us the chance to make a difference, to #choosetochallenge. Our Sage community of colleague’s, partners and customers can all play their part to make a real different in our society, to contribute to baking that new pie.

3 年For me this is the best post for international womens day I have seen so far. Thank you for sharing. My thoughts today were. I have been, and i still am privileged. Yet many other women (and men) around the world do not have half the opportunities I have had in my lifetime. We do indeed need to find new ways to bake a new pie.
It was wonderful to join you and your colleagues at Sage last week - thank you for giving us a platform and providing an opportunity for the voices of our Radicals to be heard. We enjoyed every minute of it and we look forward to strengthening our partnership with your team this year.
