Choose your tax return preparer wisely!

As tax season closes in, the IRS has put out pointers for taxpayers on choosing a tax return preparer.

Although Taxpayers are responsible for all the information on their tax return, not their tax-return preparers, it is still important for the taxpayer to choose their tax-return preparer wisely.

One suggestion the taxpayer should consider is whether the tax return preparer will be accessible in the months or years ahead to back up the product.

This is simply because there is a possibility that the taxpayer may have questions that need to be addressed at some later point.

Below are some additional recommendations provided by the IRS in choosing a tax-return preparer:

·        Be cautious of preparers who claim to provide larger refunds than other tax return preparers.

·        Avoid tax return preparers whose fee is a percentage of the refund and/or who offer to deposit the refund into their own account.

·        Taxpayers should steer clear of ghost tax return preparers. A ghost preparer does not sign the tax returns they prepare and may mail the return instead of E-file, the preferable option.

The takeaway is to make sure the tax return preparer is reputable and honest, and this can be done by verifying their credentials and qualifications.
