Choose your hard

I’ve been fortunate to have coached many hundreds of people over the past 21 years. They’ve virtually all been really nice, caring, ethical people who genuinely cared about their clients and families and who wanted to grow personally and professionally. But if I had to pick just one thing that separated the ones who got outstanding results to those who didn’t, it’s consistency of doing the asking, the prospecting, and the business activity. Consistency of being willing to do what they needed to do, when they needed to do it whether they felt like it or not –?most?of the time (we are all far from perfect).?
Consistency is hard because our motivation is not the same every morning. Consistently doing your prospecting can get old; it can be hard. Consistently being a patient, kind and loving parent or partner is testing (impossible you might even say on some days); it is hard to be that type of person every day. Our brain doesn’t wake us up yelling: ‘Come on! Exercise my body! Stretch me! Feed me excellent nutrition all day – don’t be putting sweet, salty, or crunchy garbage in me, okay? Just grade A fuel!’ Making these choices is hard to do consistently.
Here's an excerpt about this from my new book:?The 5 Habits to Mine Your Gold:
There’s no point in fooling yourself: getting great outcomes in any area of life almost always requires a lot of work. I learned a powerful concept from financial advisor Eszylfie Taylor when I sat on a top producer panel with him at the Beirut Life Insurance Seminars in 2022:
CHOOSE YOUR HARD
Being successful is hard. Being a failure is hard.
Being rich is hard. Being poor is hard.
Being married is hard. Being divorced is hard.
Being fit is hard. Being unfit is hard.

CHOOSE YOUR HARD.
Being average can be hard too – if it’s anything that matters to you.?
Understanding that there is rarely a short cut is important. When you look at a high achiever’s routines, they are simply not what average people are willing to do. Consistently. BUT it is enormously empowering to know that you can choose your hard too. Yes, it is hard to be, do and have many of the things you want in life,?but the alternative is just as hard too. Frankly, it is harder to live with because you know that you could have tried harder. You could have done the work, but you made the many small daily decisions not to.
Knowing there is a hard to choose can be reassuring and make it easier to get out of bed early to exercise (or write your book – what I’m doing right now on the day of this writing!).?“I’m choosing my hard.”?It can make it easier to make extra prospecting phone calls or go to additional events to promote your business. “I’m choosing my hard.” It can make it easier to go out to meet a new date when your comfort zone would rather you stay at home and watch a movie. “I’m choosing my hard.” Gradually these daily decisions can help you to build your self-discipline muscle.?
There is no failure on this journey unless you give up forever.?Experiment?with what you do, stay focused on who you want to be and keep taking action after learning from what does and doesn’t work. Even though there will be periods of your life when you take steps back, keep moving and you can mine your gold. Let me show you how…
