Choose Your Favorite Reason Your Resume Is Getting Blocked By The ATS

There are many reasons candidate resumes get blocked by Applicant Tracking Systems.

But job seekers often think there's just one thing they're doing wrong. If they fix that one thing, their resume magically will be seen. But it's usually many things that get you stuck in the ATS, not just one.

Here are some common reasons your resume is getting blocked by the ATS:

  1. Minimal Customization:?Most candidates average 15-20 minutes of customization for each resume they send, while ATSs are programmed to screen out resumes with minimal or no customization. 15-20?minutes isn't enough to get you through the ATS very often.
  2. No Customization:?If you're sending a standard resume template, you're not even trying.
  3. Poor Employer Research:?Publicly available information (including the job description), gives you no advantage over other candidates and it's almost always obsolete. For example, job descriptions are written by HR and Legal to avoid risk, rather than describe the hiring manager's current needs - they are generic for all similar positions under different managers, departments, divisions, business units, products, including up to the VP level. Search criteria are based on hiring manager needs, not the job description.
  4. JobScan Or AI Tools:?The problem with JobScan and AI tools is what you input into those tools ... the job description. They may match keywords in the job description, but job descriptions rarely match hiring manager current needs. Recruiter search criteria (which aren't published publicly) are based on hiring manager needs, so they are usually very different than job descriptions ... so JobScan and AI tools aren't able to match criteria they (and you) don't see.
  5. Incompatible Formatting:?There are hundreds of ATSs, each with dozens of versions that each treat resume formatting differently. Many resume formats won't be directly readable by the ATS an individual employer uses, or will ignore important information (including contact info), put information into the wrong places, causing recruiters to move to the next candidate. You won't know which ATS or version an individual employer uses or how it treats your resume's formatting.
  6. It Gets Through The ATS, But Gets Screened Out In Human Review:?Just because your resume gets through the ATS, it's no guarantee of an interview - You still may be getting screened out by HR reps/recruiters, or the hiring manager.

Is it possible that intentionally letting your resume get blocked makes it instantly "stand out from the crowd," and at least it gets glanced at by a human (before it gets discarded), as opposed to never being seen? :D
