Choose Your Brand: Aligning Values and Lifestyle as a Hospitality Professional

I will never forget this pivotal day in my life and career. I was called into my boss's office to have a chat with her. I nervously walked into her office and had a seat, completely unaware of what would be discussed. She turned to me and said "David, how many hotel brands do you think there are in the world?" Not knowing where she was heading, I replied "hundreds?" She said, "exactly, and not every brand is for everyone. We must choose a brand that fits our values and our style, so we can stay true to ourselves."

Wow! That message hit me like a ton of bricks! Here I was, dressed in a three-piece suit looking like a character on Mad Men, finally liberated from the notion that I HAD to work for this brand and this hotel because it would add panache and gravitas to my profile as a hotelier. From that day on, I vowed to find the right brand that represented me as a human, in my most pure and fundamental form.

As hospitality professionals, we understand the immense impact that a hotel brand can have on the overall guest experience. However, what many individuals fail to realize is the profound influence that a hotel brand can have on their own professional and personal lives. With a multitude of hotel brands saturating the market today, it becomes crucial for us to carefully consider and choose a brand that aligns with our values and lifestyle.

With this article, I hope to help you explore the significance of selecting the right hotel brand as you navigate through your career. Below are five key points to consider when making choices as you progress through your hospitality journey.

  1. Define your Values: Every individual possesses a unique set of values that shape their professional journey. Understanding your core values will enable you to identify hotel brands that resonate with your beliefs and aspirations. Are you passionate about sustainability and eco-conscious practices? Do you prioritize inclusivity and diversity? Perhaps, your focus lies in luxury experiences or personalized service. By introspecting and identifying your core values, you can begin to narrow down the array of hotel brands available to you.
  2. Research Brand Differentiation: In the vast landscape of hotel brands, each one has its own distinct identity and positioning. It is imperative to research and analyze the core principles, brand ethos, and mission of various hotel brands. Are they committed to social responsibility? Do they prioritize employee well-being and growth? Assessing these factors will help you determine whether a particular brand's values align with your own, enabling you to forge a stronger connection with your workplace and contribute meaningfully to its success.
  3. Analyze Lifestyle Compatibility: Beyond professional aspirations, your choice of a hotel brand can significantly impact your personal lifestyle. Hotels operate on various models such as luxury, boutique, budget, or extended stay, each catering to different demographics and preferences. Consider the work-life balance you desire, the level of commitment and flexibility you seek, and the opportunities for growth and advancement. A brand that aligns with your desired lifestyle will not only enhance your job satisfaction but also contribute to your overall well-being.
  4. Consider Professional Development and Networking: Choosing the right hotel brand goes beyond immediate job satisfaction. It can provide a platform for continuous learning, skill development, and networking opportunities. A brand with a robust training and development program, mentorship initiatives, and a culture of innovation can nurture your career growth and propel you towards success in the hospitality industry. Evaluating a brand's commitment to your professional development will ensure that you remain motivated and inspired in your role.
  5. Never Sacrifice Personal Fulfillment: Ultimately, the choice of a hotel brand should resonate with your own sense of purpose and fulfillment. Working for a brand that shares your values and embraces your lifestyle choices will contribute to a sense of personal satisfaction. It will enable you to thrive in an environment where you can fully express yourself, make a positive impact, and build a rewarding career.

As hospitality professionals, we must recognize that our choice of a hotel brand has far-reaching consequences, impacting our professional growth, personal lifestyle, and overall happiness. By identifying our core values, researching brand differentiations, assessing lifestyle compatibility, and considering professional development opportunities, we can make an informed decision that aligns our values and aspirations with the right hotel brand.

Life is too short to try to force a square peg into a round hole. Remember, the journey towards a fulfilling career in hospitality begins with selecting the brand that reflects who you are and supports your vision for success. Choose wisely, and let your professional journey flourish.

Finding a company that aligns with who you are as a person will allow you and the company to thrive. Many of these are logos, not brands... Seth Godin has a great video that talks about the difference between the two. https://youtu.be/RZ-i3A4_6HE
