T - Minus 175 Days
On my first day on the job, I was so excited! The first orders were to tweak a manufacturer demo to scan some barcodes on a portable terminal, enter a quantity, and then upload to a PC to print out barcode labels.
However, my new office was a train wreck with spilled soda cans and sticky candy wrappers everywhere, including random cables with rolls of expensive thermal printer ribbon and labels unraveled and strewn all over the floor.
Apparently "Dewayne" did some technical work at night, also going threw every cabinet and drawer. Besides being a slob and a creeper, he obviously had no clue about computers.
The strategy was simple: draw a picture and document the steps upfront, eliminate distractions, and create reusable code to quickly adapt to any scenario. With the office and computers clean and organized, I showed the concept document and ran the brief demo for the owner for a great ending to the first day.
The next morning, my office is trashed again and the demo is broken! It was me or Dewayne. Any challenge is Enders Game.
I could have been fired on my second day, but it's another strategy to give and then ask to eliminate drama and offer a better choice.
