Choose Right Words to Say What You Intend to Say

Do you always find the right word at the right time and at the right place when you want to compliment someone? Have you ever faced a difficulty in putting across something with the right words? Have you been in a situation when you said something and later realised that you intended to say something else or in a better way? I am sure we all come across these circumstances quite often. Most people welcome and enjoy a good compliment, but sometimes the words we use to compliment people aren’t always the most original.?

Whatever is the situation, to create the correct impact it’s helpful to have an arsenal of words at your disposal that truly reflects the meaning of what you wish to say. Here are a few of the most common words we use to describe people, and some other, even better ways to say them.?

kind

Kind is an adjective that means “of a good or benevolent nature or disposition.” You may want to describe someone as kind either because of that person’s kind actions or specific qualities that the person possesses.??

For example, if you’re describing someone as kind because of their generosity or ability to be a supportive friend, you may opt for words like:

sympathetic, charitable, compassionate

If you think of someone as kind because they are nice or caring, you may use words such as:

gracious, loving, gentle?

intelligent

Intelligence comes in many forms. There are various synonyms for intelligent that can help you distinguish exactly why you think someone’s intelligence is different than the rest.?

You may want to praise someone for being smart or for their mental agility. You may be impressed with their ability to think differently. There are synonyms for intelligent that capture all of those things. Whether you’re praising an extraordinary student in a class or applauding someone’s outstanding contributions in a work meeting, liven up your praise with some other words for intelligent, such as:

resourceful, clever, ingenious, perceptive, inventive?

trustworthy

In today’s world being called as trustworthy can be a sign of that person being mature enough to do that specific task. There might be situations wherein you want to thank your kid for using the electronic gadgets judiciously or managing the money in a responsible way. Or perhaps your co-worker is using you as a reference, and you want to explain that they’re the kind of colleague you can always depend on.?

Trustworthy would certainly apply in those cases, but you can make your praise more impactful by using the words such as:

responsible, principled, upright, dependable, ethical, sensible

?hardworking

If someone’s dedication has truly impressed you then describing that person as simply hardworking may not put across the praise effectively. The synonyms like dedicated, persevering, assiduous would be more helpful.

It may be more impressive to use praising words like diligent, sedulous, enterprising to describe your professor, boss, partner, or co-worker. These words show that you not only appreciate someone’s willingness and ability to work hard, but you also value their dedication, diligence, and commitment to giving you their best.?

creative

Creative means “resulting from originality of thought, expression; imaginative,” and there are many areas to which this description may apply. If you’re describing or reviewing an artistic work such as a movie, album or exhibit, creative could likely be very boring description you can use. Instead, you might say the work is:

innovative, visionary, inspired

Similarly, there could be instances where your colleague finds a creative way to solve problems or a student whose approach to assignments is truly out of the box, you can let them know that you admire their talent by using words like:

original, clever, stimulating, inventive

You need to be creative while praising someone for their creativity.?

thoughtful

The word thoughtful means “showing consideration for others.” If you find someone buying someone a gift they’ll really enjoy, offering a cup of tea when they’ve had a rough time, or wishing good luck to a friend before an exam then we call that person as thoughtful. To describe someone’s ability to show consideration for others, there are plenty of other words to choose from.?

You can describe someone’s thoughtful acts or let them know how much you appreciate their care and attention, try one of the following:

considerate, attentive, helpful, astute, unselfish?

funny

Everyone likes to have a person around who can make you laugh. Think of the funniest person you know. Complimenting or describing that person simply as funny may not help. It wouldn’t be appropriate at times to call that person just as funny. Luckily, there are many other words that you can use in many occasions.?

There are actually dozens of synonyms you can use in place of the word funny, and each one captures a unique aspect of what makes something or someone funny, consider one of these words instead:

absurd, hilarious, amusing, whimsical, capricious?

Language offers you many choices of words to express yourself in a right way. Knowing various words can make your communication impactful. Using the right word or phrase at the right place and time can create your distinct impression.

To sum up, Napolean Hill had once said “Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another.”
