Choose Peace Over Reaction.

Learning to ignore can bring peace to our lives. Many of our life’s troubles stem from our own attitudes, especially when we overreact to minor issues. By responding with intense negativity to something trivial, we harm ourselves more than we realize. Even the smallest of incidents, which could easily be ignored, can crush our emotions when we let our reactions take control.

Perhaps you’ve heard the popular story on social media—a snake once crossed over a saw lying on the ground, and one of its teeth scratched it slightly. Enraged, the snake bit the saw, injuring its mouth severely. As its anger grew, it lost control and wrapped itself tightly around the saw, attempting to crush it. But the saw’s sharp teeth cut into the snake’s body repeatedly, leaving it wounded beyond repair until it finally lost its life. If the snake had just ignored the initial scratch, it would have survived. Instead, its anger and overreaction cost it everything.

We often make the same mistakes in our lives. When a person, event, or relationship “scratches” us, we tend to react with intense anger. Though the matter may be small, our anger can lead us to harm ourselves and put our emotional and mental health at risk. This is why it’s often better to overlook minor hurts, misunderstandings, or disappointments to live peacefully. Forgiving others is far better than causing harm to ourselves by losing control.
