In society, innovation can take the form of an entirely new and often unexpected?solution to an existing problem. In business, it could take the form of a?new product or service.?

How can you foster innovation in your business?

  1. Allow room to 'wander': Innovation is often sparked by a burst of creativity. Promote creativity in your organisation by giving your employees the freedom to mentally switch off from the day-to-day and explore new ideas and other disciplines. Create time for these ‘wanders’ each week (they don’t have to be long) and encourage your staff to explore hobbies outside of work, too.

The key to building an ‘innovation mentality’ lies in the processes, mental models, and ways of thinking that make up a company.

How to build innovation into your company culture:

1. Stamp out anti-innovation: Before you can embrace innovation, you need to make sure none of your current processes are?standing in the way. Examples of anti-innovation include:

  • Lack of recognition or reward systems?
  • A rigid ‘this is the way it’s always been done’ mentality
  • Lack of collaboration
  • Fear of leadership
  • No ‘idea generation’ process in place
