When should you start thinking about downsizing? Many people ask themselves this question as they age and encounter different needs in their living circumstances.
While moving is always stressful and can take an emotional and physical toll, there are many aspects to consider when thinking about the next steps in life, including the option of an independent living community.
- Community: A sense of community is a shared longing. Many people need a new daily community when they retire, or their children start their own families. With an independent living community, there is a vibrant community right outside your apartment door.
- Loneliness: Loneliness is not suitable for anyone and can be a predictor of poor health. It is especially prevalent with older people whose social circles shrink as they age. Independent living communities can help seniors combat their loneliness by providing a place to participate and meet new people.?
- Purpose: Some may need a greater sense of purpose - looking for meaning in life after retirement or raising their family. Often, people do not know what to do with their time. With independent living, there are a variety of activities, classes, and outings to choose from or groups to join that can give back that purpose you crave.
- Safety: Most houses are not built for aging and cannot be easily renovated to accommodate those needs. There might be too many stairs, or the space is not conducive to using a walker. Your home not serving your aging may seem annoying or slightly irritating initially, but it can lead to serious safety concerns. Residents do not need to worry about safety in independent living communities because the buildings and apartments are designed for seniors.
- Upkeep: Often, houses feel too big and need too much maintenance—lawn care, essential house maintenance, and constant home cleaning are not what you should be doing in retirement. Independent living allows you to enjoy your retirement without worrying about home maintenance.
Independent living communities provide a sense of belonging, a variety of daily activities, a renewed sense of purpose, and alleviate the burden of house maintenance. These vibrant communities are places where residents actively participate in various activities in the convenience of their new home.
