Choose Coaches, Not Teams!

Does it really matter what team you play for as much as who the coach is?
Does it really matter the logo on the jersey more than the the integrity level of the staff?
Does it really matter the quality of players on the team more than the quality of leadership on the staff?
Are you choosing the coaches' willingness to give you the exposure, guidance, and skill set or are you choosing the program that has the cool socks to match the bags and the shoes to match the uniform?
I read something earlier that said, "Don't pick a job. Pick a boss!" It went on to talk about how it is the boss who will either give the opportunity to grow, or not trust you with those opportunities. Being involved with youth sports, that resonated with me. Parents get so caught up with the TEAM and don't care that the coach is bad. Yea, there was somebody who did a great job forming the organization, but that doesn't mean that that same person is coaching your kid. And if he/she is also the coach, that doesn't mean that they have your kid's best interest in mind.
Look, a lot of coaches have missed these very same opportunities in their lives. They wanted to to play D1 or D2 or heck, ANY kind of basketball in college. They wanted to be recruited. They wanted to be the star. They wanted the special treatment. They wanted the team warm ups, shoes, and bags. But they weren't good enough! NOW, they're still in the field, and their living those missed opportunities out through their coaching position. It's about them, not YOUR kid! Is that the team you want your kid playing on?
I'm going to leave it at that.
Case and Point: We must look for substance and stop going for the perception. If something is important, dig a little deeper. You will find that just because it's popular, that doesn't mean that it's the right fit.
